Could very easily return to this lovely city for an extended stay. No HOHO bus, but a city tour was available and we jumped on the bus for some sights to capture us.
Clean, ordered, well presented and picturesque. As we toured through the city not only did we look at the architecture but we were also very appreciative of the pride the Sardinians take in the homes. Cagliari doubled its population in the 20 years since the war so there are many more “modern” apartment buildings but it is the balcony gardens and window pots that add lots of charm to the city. Then another standout was the ordered parking….in parking lots and the flow of traffic was very smooth. We headed to the outskirts of the city …to Poetto Beach an 8km beach that runs from “The Devil’s Saddle” ( a rocky promontory near Cagliari town and then back past the salt mine beds where there are 10,000 nesting pink flamingos. Yes we saw them from various vantage points around the city BUT they were a little too far to get a good photo. But we saw them ….they are pink because of a shrimp that they eat. (Google Sardinia Flamingos ….very interesting) from here up to the highest point of the city for some spectacular views in all directions.
We passed the two stadiums that have been used by the Cagliari Calcio Soccer team ( Amsicori Stadium and Sant ’Ella Stadium) I believe a new stadium is under construction to be completed in 2020. After returning to the port area we ventured off on foot to further explore Cagliari, very inviting, non-threatening with cute shops ….my souvenir purchase here was a flamingo phone cover!
Glad I have been here.
Cheers, Mrs Always Right
Off to Palma de Mallorca Spain in an hour or so ….will keep you all posted!
