Final Post with a Few Formalities

Well Folks ….thanks for traveling with us along the way. It’s great to have some friendly followers to remind us of home and what we are heading home to. We have had a great time and want to stress to you all that you MUST NOT let the negative events happening around the world stop you from enjoying this MARVELLOUS planet and all that it has to offer.  Not only is it great to have friendly followers it is even more satisfying and comforting to know that there are people back home holding the fort for us to allow us to have such adventures. A HUGE thank you to Dave for his efforts with our fur babies each Tuesday, maintaining their hydrotherapy and bathing routine, hours out of your day that we really appreciate (although your friendship is more treasured!) To Ash and Michael, our furbaby  surrogate parents, our thanks to you is immeasurable !!!! Staying here with our babies! We hope you enjoyed them as much as we enjoy them. Maintaining their medication and feeding routines is something they need and something that we greatly appreciate….Not to mention the importance of cuddles in a storm! We are so happy for you celebrating your engagement while we were away, and wish you much happiness in the future…BUT …keep your calendar open for future bookings!

To Sharon and Byron, treasured friends and traveling companions, what a wonderful time we have had. So glad to have shared this experience with you and hoping another opportunity will arise to do it all again! The “boy banter” each day was a comical enjoyment.

And finally ..Mr Right/Himself/ My Other (not better) Half ,wherever we are, whatever we do, we do it together. Now in retirement this WILL be a much more regular occurrence…are you ready? …Love you always

…and to those we met along the way, G’Day and see ya all around somewhere, some time!

Over and out! (for now!)

7 ******* Experiences.

Our last day in Dubai turned out to be one of the best. We started the day early at the Dubai Museum. It was right across the road from our hotel and it opened at 8:30am so we were there before the throngs of tour groups. This was an amazing museum that has artifacts that date back 5000 years. The dioramas depicted life in Dubai over the years and the design of the museum itself was very viewer friendly and cool (always a bonus in Dubai). After a couple of hours here we returned to hotel and packed bags ready for return journey to Australia, then off to the Burj Al Arab high tea. Burj Al Arab is apparently the number one, 7 star hotel in the world. And here we were!!! We enjoyed a feast that we could not finish but only one complimentary bubbles as the next glass would have been $50+ …now I don’t know about you but that is just not on for me…just too pricey. Finished up there (disappointingly a VERY hazy view) and headed back to hotel …our experience of Dubai peak traffic. CRAZY and on an 18 lane motorway! 21 km in 1 hour 15 minutes) Back to hotel, final night’s sleep before an early start to the airport. Quick check in ..Emirates Lounge then board for the 13+ hour journey home. Himself sat through a movie marathon or 5 or so movies, I watched some interesting movies, documentaries etc …..really recommend “Meagan Leavey” …superb movie (to me) …..then landed in Brisbane a few minutes early and home.

Make sure you read the next, last and most important post.

Dirhams , Double Deckers, Degrees, Days in Dubai

The currency is Dirhams, The Big Bus is a double decker HOHO bus, the degrees were in the high 30s, we were here for 3 days and the city is Dubai. Very glad we came here. We were up early from our Arabian Courtyard hotel room furnished in true Arabian style to join the Big Bus Tour just across the road. The bus IS air conditioned like most places in Dubai…even bus stops. There were quite a few routes around the city but we started with the red route which took us from the old Dubai past various points of interest to the modern Dubai ….AMAZING…one minute you are looking at old forts, souks (old markets) and dhow (transport boats) and the next you are gazing at the tallest building in the world, then at a man made palm island to watching fountains dance to Nessan Dorma. We really got our money’s worth on the HOHO , also visiting 2 very huge malls with ice rinks, ski slopes, aquariums and shops, shops, shops and even more shops with marble floors. Dubai has NO graffiti, (OK just one) NO litter, and is a very westernized multi-cultural city with a huge number of expats. Today is our last day before travel and this morning we were both blown away by the Dubai Museum  (just across the road from our hotel) what an interesting couple of hours spent here…the history is just amazing. Later today we are finishing off our trip in style. We are heading to the ONLY 7 star hotel in the world for High Tea…which will be VERY different from choking on chilli at the local pub!….can’t come this far and not tick this off the bucket list! Will try to post on FB …but if not….next post will be the closing post written at the Murrumba Madhouse back home ….till then….pinkie to the sky!!!

Venice to Dubai

So we once again admire the familiar skyline of Venice as we cruise past St Marks Square and  other familiar sights to dock and end our second cruise on MSC Sinfonia.. all decks named after composers. We enjoyed her she was relaxing and more like a P&O cruise. Cabin much smaller but great dining and on deck activities were good…just as well seeing we had 2 sea days. Would I recommend MSC…definitely!  Anyhow an orderly and efficient disembark and transfer to Marco Polo Airport…and that’s where the “orderly and efficient” ceased! OMG what a debacle …..we were too early to check in as our flight was later in the day but the queues made us very thankful we were there early. First debarcle ….trying to get VAT (tax) back …I am still too angry about this  to comment ..if you are going to Europe I will have a private conversation with you! Just sayin’ ….So now we can check in …that went so smoothly thanks to Wayne’s QANTAS status and Emirates being a partner. Then the queue through security ..well let’s just say better than earlier in the day, but still atrocious…….THEN!!!!! came the big queue, to get through customs OMG this queue wound around the airport like a snake and I reckon the shop owners would be fuming….not a chance to shop!!..and this is what a girl MUST do when travelling…I had spare Euro!!!!  Anyhow, let’s jump the boring to landed in Dubai at midnight and was asleep in bed by 1:30am.

SORRY NO PHOTOS!

Ascending Ancona

So here we are last port for second cruise, Ancona …not as big as some of the previous ports but still with the same earthy tones on the buildings and history that goes back further than I can remember! (Must be still on the cruise as I just had a wave and the wobbles just hit me) ..Couldn’t be last nights G&Ts as I only had one!  Anyhow(get back to the blog girl!) So we disembark and the tourist office at the welcome port suggested we go to the cathedral ….well that’s up the top of the hill overlooking the town ….so off we go …Fitbit counting steps and more steps and then an elevator! takes us up a bit , but many more steps to go …keep going….then we finally get there…sadly what looked like a police funeral taking place ( if it had been any more steps it could have been my funeral!!) WE went inside the cathedral and for those who understand the lingo ABC ….but a great view.  Then

D

O

W

N        always easier going down stairs!

A wander through alleys, cobblestones , old buildings and then we finally find the city centre and its market day ….lots of clothes !!!! NO purchases ….then a visit to a beautiful park and we meet a bulging belly bulldog with his master. Bully took his final step for his walk and bellied out on the ground….that’s it …I am going no further!!!! Owner tried desperately to get him up but no way was that going to happen….a crowd gathering and owner beginning to get a bit embarrassed…Himself starts snapping and laughing aloud! A little more  look around and then back to the ship …cocktail time! Disembark tomorrow for flight to Dubai ….(prepare….next blog post will be interesting .. …  Venice Airport!)

Till then Arivaderci

Delightful Dubrovnik

Well THIS , so far has been the favourite!!!! An absolutely beautiful place to see. Put it on your bucket list! We shuttled in to the city from the ship and then once again jumped on the local HOHO Bus for a tour around this fascinating place. The views from the top looking down on the city and coastline can’t be described with just words. We then headed into the walled city for a stroll around and as we listened to some choristers and music on the steps of the church we watched some menacing black storm clouds gather. Luckily next to the church steps was a pub!!! Took shelter out of the rain and wet our whistle with a great bottle of wine! No sense whining about the weather when other wine is available! Soon we had to head back to the shuttle to get back on board ….got soaked …who cares! ..and Wayne and Byron took over the singing duties for Dubrovnik entertaining the crowds (trying to shelter from the rain) along the way with their renditions  of  Singing in the Rain , Always Look On The Bright Side of Life and Raindrops Keep Falling on my Head. Got a few strange looks but it seemed to cheer most people up!

PS. We found the  pirate’s lolly shop !

A great place to plan a return visit

Divine Drive, Donkeys, Dung and Disappointing

You think I missed a post? ….yes ….but that was due to the fact that we had a sea day and it was time for a break ….was a bit of an isolate actually …lounging in cabin watching a few episodes of “The Crown” ….Anyhow, the next port was in view on awakening on Tuesday, tenders from the island were preparing to take us to Santorini. Early start, on the first tender to this island of steep rock faces and beautiful Greek buildings boasting the blue and white colours that are NOT representative of the colours of their flag. It is all about the chemical makeup of the plaster and the whitewash used. Getting off the tender and there was the cable-car to take us to the top where, from afar, the white buildings look like snow on a mountain top. A VERY steep but short trip to the top and there we were met by numerous sensory treats …the colours, the views and the sight and smell of donkeys and their dung. The donkey teams were on their way to the bottom to carry tourists to the top. The donkeys just follow the cobblestone path ..I think their shoes may be rubber! Then we were meandering the narrow cobblestone alleys once again looking at the local crafts and products…..some BEAUTIFUL embroidery was yelling at me to purchase!!! After a little while we decided to jump on a local, private, small bus that took us on a divine drive to one end of the island and back. Great scenery, shopping (nuts etc) and yet more selfies, now to be known as couplies.

We then did some shopping and headed back to the ship (via the cable car down) as we had a double port on one day. Back on ship a few refreshing drinks on the deck (thank God for the drinks package) an early dinner and then docking at Mykonos for 8pm disembark. This is where the word “disappointing” applies. It was dark, and we could not see the colours and views of Mykonos. It was alight with shops, yachts, cruise ships and street life but we could not look at what seemed to be crystal clear water. But hey …I can now say we have been to Mykonos. It will be worthy of a return trip I think.

Today is another sea day before arriving in Dubrovnik tomorrow….more on the drinks package and maybe another episode or two of “The Crown”
Until the next write up.

Spectacular Split

So we set foot on Croatian soil for the first time…..the sights as we approached the port were VERY inviting. Another amazing city with history, local crafts and interesting people. The people of Split displayed the best English skills of all the cities we have visited so far. It very much shows why so many people back home say that they love Croatia. I think this is the new go to place for Aussies. The port is right beside the old walled city and for this reason we decided to skip the HOHO bus and just do the whole town on foot. So glad we did as we were able to amble around the alleys and laneways into ancient squares and under arches that were built without the construction equipment that we have today and yet they are strong and sturdy. We meandered the market stalls, observed the fish market, witnessed the embroidery, gazed at stone structures, salivated in the candy stores and complained about the graffiti. All through this trip so far we have seen what we as humans should be disgusted by!!! …. Graffiti on buildings that should be respected….it is such a shame to see this abuse. Each time we stopped to look at a part of this old city we wondered if this part was the “vomiteria” …we overheard a guide explaining to his crowd that in these days long past when feasts were held, people would gorge themselves so much that thy would go and vomit! (gross!) After about 13 000 steps on the Fitbit we headed back to the ship and had a GREAT couple of hours watching the pool deck activities. A couple of “under 3” toddlers were so entertaining as they joined in the Zumba dance lesson and the aerobics class…..that was our people watching for the day! Loved it!

End of One, Beginning of Another

So here we are already done first cruise on the MSC Slendida, The Splendida was a BIG ship, she was glitzy and had many bars and lounges to accommodate the 4000 passengers (although our cruise was NOT full…more likely to do with back to school schedule for Europe) but at no time did the ship appear crowded ….the passengers were very spread out. The dining room was well managed and the gourmet meals were quite small in portion size, this was good as it enabled us to have and enjoy 2/3 courses without feeling bloated. Our dining partners were a lovely young couple from Italy, Marco and Arianna, both students and very much wanting to improve their English, so conversation was great each evening we learnt much about Italy and they expanded their English. We did not engage in the entertainment shows as we were on first sitting for dining and the late show was too late for our desire to explore new cities each day. Shopping was good and yes, some purchases were made. Cabin was spacious and cabin crew kept it neat and tidy, but NO animal towels on this cruise. Laundry service was excellent. Cocktail list was adequate but not extensive. I would give this ship a high recommendation. Anyhow, time to disembark to the familiar town of Genoa to board a coach to Venice. On the road by 10am and battling the morning traffic to get out of Genoa after a 4000 passenger ship adds many, many taxis to the congestion. Soon out onto the motorway driving along (on the right hand side of the road) past the towns on the hills and the ploughed fields ready for their winter crops …some fields of tomato plants with splashes of red and many grape vines too. Soon we pull into a very familiar place …an Autogrille….30 minute break before heading off to the Venice Port (arrive about 2:30pm) A speedy embarkation and before long we are on the top deck of MSC Sinfonia (all decks named after composers…we are on Tchaikovsky…others Bach, Beethoven etc) and with the help of a few tug boats we are cruising through Venice…a fabulous sight from this level. Passing St Mark’s Square etc and really seeing the problem of Venice “sinking”…some towers are on more of a lean than those in Pisa!!!!!! A very spectacular sight !

Mus’ Say Marseille is Good

On coming in to port today we were greeted by a Hollywood style sign on the hill….just in case we were confused as to where we were today! Himself now keen to get on with what’s becoming the daily ….a selfie. Disembark and onto the shuttle into the city. A wander around the city port to the HOHO bus terminal …this time called the Colorbus. So past the usual sights of cathedrals, fortresses, theatres and the like. A cute little beach and some islands enroute to the Notre Dame …now this sparked a school memory for me as on the wall in the language lab at Greystanes High School was a poster of a building and a caption at the bottom, I looked at it every school day for at least 4 years. The caption was “Marseille..le vous porte Notre Dame de la Garde”….and here we were on the “de la Garde” climbing up a narrow winding street toward the Notre Dame (a gold clad cathedral at the top of the hill) Himself was at one stage going to offer to get out and push the bus , but we made it and have a refreshed respect for the drivers of these sightseeing buses. Back down the narrow street and back to the city centre where we got on the shortest commercial ferry trip in Europe (estimate 200m max) across the water to the other side of the city. A meander around the square and a visit to a French delicacies shop …YES of course we had a handmade chocolate and the a walk through the market area where they sell local nougat and handmade soap (made from olive oil) ….then there it was, beckoning us, a bar/café right on the corner where we could sit and people watch with a wine and baguette.

Next a visit to the local supermarket, very upmarket, more like the old David Jones Gourmet food section. This shop led us into the multi level Westfield style shopping centre. No purchases but did spend 50c Euro (toilet price)…back onto the bus shuttle back to ship and cocktail time was a relaxing end to a day in Marseille.

Placas and Ponts – Valencia

The flood of 1957 was literally the last straw for the city of Valencia. Over 75 floods during the previous 700 years caused the government of the day to plan to re-route the Turia River away from the center of the city. This created a huge, long public space in the old riverbed, the Jardi del Turia; gardens, football fields, open air theatres all sprang up after the project was completed in 1973. Fascinating what you learn from the HoHo bus commentary 🙂

The HoHo in Valencia leaves from the Placa de la Reina. The MSC shuttle dropped us off on the other side of the Jardi del Turia, so lets find a Pont (bridge) and cross into a bewildering series of Placas (places, plazas, choose your language <g>) to de la Reina. Listened what we thought was the best and most interesting (to us, at least) commentary we’ve had yet. Then back, to wander through that labyrinth of placas, laneways and twisting streets. Enjoyable, so many little unique shops, bars and restaurants.

We settled on a smaller place near to where we would catch the return  shuttle. I carefully checked for any trees, or over hanging perches, I did not want a repeat of yesterday! Ah, bliss, cold, tasty beer. And, a really nice crunchy roll; bacon, camembert, and caramelised onions.

Yum! Whoops, nearly 3pm, better get that last shuttle or be stranded in Valencia.

Valencia? Lovely, place, especially the older, walled portion. Re visit? We’d probably choose Mallorca or Sardinia in preference. Off to Marseille tomorrow, then finish this cruise at Genoa.

Mr Right

Yes …I have to cope with another language tomorrow. From German to Italian to Spanish to French ….thank God for McDonalds and the pictures on certain doors!…..The bag now has a pair of shoes , a handbag, some linen and other treats for I wonder who …..what will tomorrow bring? Hopefully the rescue of Mexican children above all!

Angry Birds in Mallorca

Angry birds all right! More on that later (or if you’re following us on Facebook you’ve already seen it, bleh).

We pulled in Palma de Mallorca at 2pm and started disembarking. It’s a bit too far to walk into town, so MSC put on shuttle buses, $10 each, return. The feel of this town is similar to Cagliari; welcoming to tourists, clean, organised and very pretty. The local we met was the friendly – NOT – HoHo Bus rep. Arrogant little twerp in fact, obviously stressed about the number of people lining up to purchase bus tickets. Regardless, we got on and plugged our earphones in (note: these ones where much more comfortable than other cities!) and tuned into the English commentary. Some fascinating history and current conditions, great architecture and a stupendous view from the top of the mountain were all highlights of this trip. We got off back at the cathedral and walked up and around it. It still amazes me that edifices of this calibre were built without the modern mechanical advantages we have now.

From the cathedral we wound our way back down the hill, through a multitude of little alleys, all with their own unique stores and bars. At the bottom, we wandered along what was the river bed – and is now a pedestrian mall – to find a place to “people watch” and enjoy our customary G & T 🙂

That’s when the Angry Bird decided my leg was the perfect spot to drop a steaming hot, and large, portion of it’s alimentary canal. Bleh. Numerous serviettes (and a dollop of hand cleaner) later we resumed our G & T. Herself, of course, giggled uncontrollably at the circumstances. Bleh again. So, back to the ship, late dinner, bed. Valencia tomorrow!

Spectacular Sardinia (Cagliari)

Could very easily return to this lovely city for an extended stay.  No HOHO bus, but a city tour was available and we jumped on the bus for some sights to capture us. Clean, ordered, well presented and picturesque. As we toured through the city not only did we look at the architecture but we were also very appreciative of the pride the Sardinians take in the homes. Cagliari doubled its population in the 20 years since the war so there are many more “modern” apartment buildings but it is the balcony gardens and window pots that add lots of charm to the city. Then another standout was the ordered parking….in parking lots and the flow of traffic was very smooth. We headed to the outskirts of the city …to Poetto Beach an 8km beach that runs from “The Devil’s Saddle” ( a rocky promontory near Cagliari town and then back past the salt mine beds where there are 10,000 nesting pink flamingos. Yes we saw them from various vantage points around the city BUT they were a little too far to get a good photo.  But we saw them ….they are pink because of a shrimp that they eat. (Google Sardinia Flamingos ….very interesting) from here up to the highest point of the city for some spectacular views in all directions. We passed the two stadiums that have been used by the Cagliari Calcio Soccer team ( Amsicori Stadium and Sant ’Ella Stadium) I believe a new stadium is under construction to be completed in 2020. After returning to the port area we ventured off on foot to further explore Cagliari, very inviting, non-threatening with cute shops ….my souvenir purchase here was a flamingo phone cover!

Glad I have been here.

Cheers, Mrs Always Right

Off to Palma de Mallorca Spain in an hour or so ….will keep you all posted!

Garibaldi, Graffiti and Grotty

On arriving in Palermo, Sicily we were amazed at the amazing landscape, so rocky and rugged and imposing in its own way. Then after a pretty full breakfast we disembarked to find the HOHO (hop on hop off). Two routes to cover, the red route and the blue. Bit of disorganised chaos on the part of the sightseeing bus company but we were eventually on our way. Like many of these European cities amazing architecture, Garibaldi monuments and statues to see……BUT what jumped out at us was the litter, graffiti, chaotic traffic and parking problems. At one stage, I thought Himself was trying to get rid of me when he just grabbed my hand and marched out in front of the traffic. …but apparently that’s how you do it ….set off and keep a steady pace…..obviously I survived or I would not be writing this post…..some of the sights I will describe as an ABC ….and many of you will know what that means. We didn’t find Palermo very inviting, maybe as it was the Mafia headquarters it has suffered over the years from money not being put back into the city itself. Mind you there is a fabulous monument to the mafia ….one of the most impressive in the city.

That being said we were back on board where more inviting things awaited us….no need to mention ….you have the gist of it by now!
PS Jacaranda trees are everywhere but have finished flowering whereas at home they are coming into flower.

Cheers

Tarquinia, Tuscania and maybe Tequila Sunrises.

After settling in to cabin 10114, meeting our fellow dinner guests and heading to bed we woke in the port for Rome which is called Civitavecchia…..it is a seaport that lies approx. 80kms WNW of Rome and a train trip into Rome is about 40 minutes. We chose NOT to go to Rome as we have been there before. Instead we chose to book a 4 hour tour of two ancient Etruscan walled towns, Tarquinia and Tuscania. Both of these places are in the Lazio province of Italy but are very similar to the area known as Tuscany. The coach took us through agricultural land where winter crops were in, those being broccoli, asparagus and fennel. Also seen were lots of olive groves. On reaching these towns we meandered trough narrow alleys and observed the architecture and saw local crafts, but mainly admired the views of the surrounding countryside. Very much like San Giminjano (further north) the quaint villas with their geranium flower troughs and potted plants on stairs and balconies were worthy of a photo. One particularly interesting feature of Tuscania was the solar clock….similar to a sundial where you stood on the appropriate place for the month and your shadow pointed to the time. After some panoramic photos and a 50 minute return journey it was time to return to Deck 14 and continue through the Pool Deck Cocktail list.
Next…..Palermo Sicily

Guide to Genoa

After checking in to Hotel Europa on Wednesday night once we got off the train we had a pizza and wine at the local pizzeria before crashing ready for a big day exploring Genoa. Early rise brekky at local and café and took off on foot to see the dock area…..was NOT too impressed, thought the alley ways and stone walls were all very dirty, also many street sellers who appeared to be on the sleazy side. Reached the aquarium area and decided to jump on a small tour bus (12 seater) travelled up a couple of streets listening to the commentary and then WOOMPAH!….around a corner and wow what a city ….fountains, frescos, mosaic paths, Christopher Columbus old house, beautifully planted gardens and all the modern shops you could ask for. Finished that tour back at the dock and decided to get onto the HOHO tour to use as our transport mode (our hotel was near the station not the city) one complete circuit and you guessed it was G&T time again ….found a great little bar/café and we people watched ….loved it ….so much that we almost missed the last bus back to hotel…..made it and then went to the station to meet Sharon and Byron after their LONG day of transport….helped them back to hotel and went to same pizzeria for pizza and wine ….a great day really…..next day, we caught a train to Santa Margherita and then a bus along the one sometimes one way winding road to the little picturesque place of Portofino. Wandered this cute place, had a wine and then reverse travelled back to Genoa where we ventured round the city with Sharon and Byron (from here on S&B) and found the local supermarket …. An hour and a half later we were on the terrace outside S&B room with meats, cheese, bread and of course wine and Jack Daniels ….few spits of rain but excellent. Next morning was embarkation day for MSC Splendida, so we had the morning to wander, saw the pirate ship and wandered a few shops and stumbled upon the Basilica of Assumption ….OMG …what a find…in many ways another Sistine Chapel. Then back to hotel for 11am checkout and down to the terminal …..were given an early board so is was time to get into cruise mode with a cocktail or five while we waited for bags and emergency drill before setting sail. Arrivaderci Genoa!

Pension Nossek

What a great place to stay! Mrs Always Right (or Herself) stayed here about 17 years ago. When we started planning this trip, I said I’d like to spend time in Vienna, as Lorraine had always waxed lyrical about how beautiful the city is. So, a bit of digging around, and a few emails later we secured a room for three nights. At $180 Euro per night, for such a central location, it’s a real bargain. It’s a bit hard to find, from a cab drivers point of view. Graben (the street itself) is a pedestrian plaza, and 17 Graben is just off the thoroughfare, drop off and walk about 50 metres. Great view from the balcony, clean rooms and a breakfast that includes fresh cooked rolls and croissants each morning. We loved it, and I’d totally recommend it as a place to stay while visiting Vienna.

Any words from Herself?

Yes…it is a quaint little place and the old world charm gives it a special feel….17 years ago the elevator was one of those double concertina gated old things …this has been renewed to a new style elevator which goes up the centre of a spiral staircase…pity they cant get the elevator numbering to match the building floor numbers!….AND apparently Mozart lived in this building foe a period of time …..I even loved the creaky floor! Much better than staying in a faceless hotel chain!

Seats, Scenery and Struggle with the Suitcases

So the alarms rings melodically on the phone @ 4 am!!!!
Taxi pick up at 5am, off to Wien Haupbahnhof (Main train station) in plenty of time for 6:30am first train leg to Worgl (with an umlaut). The extra time was worth the smells of all the fresh cooked pastries, paninis and other assorted baked goods in the fast sell outlets. Then heave the luggage in to the first-class coach and settle down for the eye entertainment that was ahead of us. There are just no words to describe the vistas. Observing the other passengers not able to find their seats and those that try to snavel a first-class seat adds to the entertainment. Then heave ho luggage again down from the train to the platform (someone really needs to introduce Europe to level platforms to the train) …a 20 minute delay for connecting train starts a panic in Herself for future connections …but obviously all was well in hindsight (marvellous thing hindsight!)……Worgl to Innsbruck and onto Verona was the second leg …so we crossed from Austria into Germany for a bit and then into Italy ….the technology with us, Himself’s Fitbit Surge, Skyroam internet and the phones had to keep up!!! Time to heave ho again …change trains …Verona, little platforms, everything is old and somewhat dirty but that is what makes travel so interesting, difference! Now this next leg was pretty interesting…..top speed 253km/h….but didn’t seem like it ……Now the scenery in Italy was very different again, lots of derelect buildings and unkept houses, graffiti everywhere, everything just needed a good lick of paint. Before long we arrive Milan and you guessed it heave ho again ….what an amazingly busy station ….and it was peak hour 5-6 o’clock…..then 20 minutes late we board for the final leg to Genoa/Genova….arriving at ¼ to 8 …still light…then NOT with the help of the phone directions (turn right, turn right, turn right)….and we hadn’t left the station! Resorted to trusty rusty map and hotel was 200metres down the street…..checked in …then out to pizzeria for a bite to eat and a relaxing wine …you guessed it time for bed!
Next post will possibly be out of sync as Himself wants to put something up about the Pension Nossek because Himself was as impressed as I was 17 years ago!
My next post will be first day in Genoa…which was today.

If we go out to the woods today, we’re in for a big surprise! And that we were!!!!!

Vienna Day 3 presented a change in weather, a bit cooler but that did not stop us from further exploration. We decided to head off on the HOHO Green route but as that didn’t start till noon we had the morning to kill. More meandering around the various shops (Schwarovski), monuments, parks and buildings. Herself gives a piano recital at the Mozart monument (just as well the piano was stone and silent!) and then the rain got a little heavier for about an hour, decision was made to get inside and stay warm in the Sacher Café (as if this historical place was NOT on our agenda). So original Sacher Torte and cream AND Apple Strudel and ice cream were ordered (to share)…..then off to pick up the green route a 3 hour round trip to the Vienna woods. A walk through the rose garden while waiting for the bus gave our eyes and noses a treat….then absolutely beautiful green scenery as we travelled through the elite suburbs of Vienna, through wine villages and up to the peak. Some showers of rain did not spoil the scenery at all. Back to Vienna and Himself was by this stage only firing on about 2 cylinders so a visit to the “Apotheke” (pharmacy) and return to hotel room. During his sleep/recovering time Herself went out into the city centre shops and cafes/bars. More people watching and whilst I had a few glasses little “Pepe” kept me company, sitting on my lap for about 20 minutes. Back to the room at about 7pm …Himself worried as to where I was and felling a little better. So much better he felt like McDonalds for tea!!!!
Tomorrow train trip to Genoa !

Purchases, Prater and People Day

So once again an early start to further explore this amazing city…so off we go wandering the various alley ways and streets and VOILA! A shoe shop that specialises in orthotics….€€€ spent…then more meandering and VOILA! A store with something like a cape on display….€€€spent…..so needless to say we returned to room to deposit purchases in bag before heading off to Stadt Park and then on another HOHO …this time the blue route taking us out to Prater (Viennese Luna Park)…here we said G’Day to some of our famous friends via a visit to Madame Taussads, noticed that Barack Obama uses a Samsung Galaxy 8! Then onto one of the oldest ferris wheels in the world….great view of Vienna. Back on the blue route and a trip over the Danube and passed all the river cruise boats bunted up to the terminal. Back to the city centre for a late lunch before a few showers wet the paths. Time to people watch with a few G&Ts ….observations 1) whatever Europeans wear, they wear it well! 2) Stilettos are a def NO! 3) Smoking is very acceptable, even in cafes (outdoor) 4) Dogs are a def part of life…but mainly itty bitty one’s, some are carried in doggie handbags. 5) Kids are cute wherever you go. Getting late so looking for something for dinner….stumbled upon a supermarket/up market deli ….€€€€ spent and a relaxing “fine dining” in room with a cold bottle of wine. Another great day!

Wien = Vienna, Day 1 Exploring HoHo

Vienna (Wien locally) is beautiful. We started the day off with a European breakfast in Pension Nossek, lovely fresh baked rolls and a selection of cheese and meats. We had a couple of hours to kill, so we walked around the city centre , being a Sunday everything was pretty quiet. Then, off to the Opera House to pick up our three day Vienna Pass for the HoHo (Hop on, Hop off Bus). 9:30 and we’re on our way. Red route first, seeing the sights and enjoying the commentary, the Danube here is a canal, and not very blue! Back to the Opera House and onto the Yellow Route. Again, winding through the streets of Vienna and learning the history of this old city. We got off at Schonbrunn Palace, the summer palace. Wow, wish we had a holiday place like this! Wandered around the gardens, then into the Palace itself for the Grand Tour. Impressive! Each room was decorated differently, even weirdly in some places 🙂 Tour groups made it a bit uncomfortable, too many people in too small a place at one time. Well worth the visit though. Then back to the Opera House and a slow meander back to Pension Nossek. Stopped off and had a drink (G&T for Herself, local beer for me). People watching is fun, some very different outfits being worn here! Went around the corner for dinner, Vienna Schnitzel of course! Big day, and after a couple of Rhine Rieslings, Herself decided passing out on the bed was the best idea 🙂

Great day, get ready for Day Two!

Flight Fatigue Forces Frivolities in 47 J&K

So after a 4 hour stay over in Dubai International Airport where we wandered the shopping precinct and relaxed in the Emirates Business Lounge we boarded our final leg flight to Vienna. We amused ourselves for a bit experimenting with the features of our new Samsung Galaxy 8 phones and as the flight was NOT full “She Who Must Be Obeyed”  moved over to the centre seats and spread out across 4 seats for a stretched out snooze. A 6 hour flight seemed to pass rather quicker than the previous legs. Then ….finally….landed in Vienna ….disembarked quick Immigration , bag retrieval and customs OK ….find our driver …who escorts us to the car ….seemed like we were walking to Vienna central !!!! 20 minute trip into Vienna central and he didn’t know how to get to Pension Nossek (one ways and plazas) ….luckily I had been here 17 years ago and after 5 trips around the blocks I got my bearings and we got out and footed it to our accommodation. Got the night porter to give us the key with label marked “2/3” ….that would be Level 2 Room 3……into the lift to level 2 ….key does NOT open door…..back to disturb night porter again …..apparently Level 2 is on level 1!!!!!!!    so try again …..yep opens the floor level door ……looking looking looking……room 1, room 2 room 4 …..NO room 3!!!!! Back to disturb the night porter!!!!!   This time she escorts us to the room …..it’s Room 2 !!!! There was a bed waiting for me ….28 hours since Brisbane airport departure …it was time to sleep!……SLEEP!!!!! what’s that ?  Jetlag!!!! Wide awake!!!! ….anyhow dozed a bit in preparation for Day 1 Vienna.

Getting there!

So before we get on to anything else it has to be said that this is only possible due to the backup from Ashleigh and Michael and Dave …keeping those treasured furry babies of ours in the way they are accustomed….was such a delight to see as photo of said fur babies when we landed in Dubai…also thanks to Ian (AKA Boxhead) for getting us to the airport on Friday night…long flights are not really that much to talk about but a bit of fun in Singapore Changi Airport with the Stormtrooper and flower car…then on to Dubai, where you walk for miles to get anywhere …killing a few hours till next leg to Vienna . You really know you are in a foreign land when the aerial shots are so different to what you see elsewhere. First leg of flight was a little bumpy but second leg was smoother…..third leg starts in a couple of hours and is about 6 hours….plenty of movies, TV shows and music to choose from …I have been mostly listening to music and watching Parramatta lose (live)…Himself may have more to add.

Not too much to add. I’m just glad it doesn’t take 7 days to get here (see photo above!). Time to move closer to the gate and hope it doesn’t change again 🙂

A New Beginning …. er, begins!

It’s almost time to leave! In the early hours of Saturday we’re heading off for about a month’s worth of travel and adventure.
Some thing a bit different this time, it’ll be planes, trains, automobiles, boats, buses and maybe camels.
We start by flying to Vienna and spending three days exploring that city. Then, a full day’s travel down to Genoa (or Genova) in Italy to pick up a 7 night cruise of the Western Mediterranean. Back to Genoa and we’re bussed across to Venice to pick up another 7 night cruise, this time the Eastern Med. When we return to Venice, we fly to Dubai for a few days, then finally back home 🙂 Mrs. Always Right will no doubt add to the blog, either tonight or during our travels.

Wayne (Mr. Right, when I’m told I can be <g>)

Mrs Always Right …AKA “She Who Must be Obeyed” needs to pack a bag before she spends time on THE BLOG….just sayin’….

Varying Emotions in Vila

IMG_1445 IMG_1486IMG_1493 IMG_1496 IMG_1499 IMG_1501 IMG_1515 IMG_1523 IMG_1530 IMG_1542Friday we dock at the Port of Vila and are ready to disembark by 9ish and laden with our donations for a local village school we head down the gangplank and head towards the throng of waiting taxi drivers and negotiate a driver for the day. We are lucky to secure Driver Roy who proves to be a great tour guide. We begin our journey through the city and quickly observe the varying stages of repair after Cyclone Pam left her mark on this island last year. Of course the government buildings are the ones most repaired and others are looking rather poor. Roy points out various buildings and we head out of the city centre along  potholed roads where dogs and chooks roam to their hearts content. Our olfactory nerves are given a wakeup by the stench from the village dumpsites on the side of the road. WE soon arrive at the village English school and as I step out of Roy’s “bomb” I am immediately approached by this delightful LITTLE 5 year old boy who shakes my hand, then WOOMPA!!! 50 kids are swarming us, they have huge smiles and are soon singing us a song. We make our donation of various craft supplies to the administrators and continue to meet and greet the children. AS we wander over to the kindergarten classroom I am feeling a growing sympathy for the conditions that these children have to learn in and an even greater concern for the teachers. The kindergarten room has 60 children and a few flashcards on the wall. Himself and I chat to the teacher and learn that these children now only learn English from Year 4. WE make our way to the upper grades and the conditions are worse!!!! These children have a makeshift Unicef Classroom tent!!!!!! but the kids quickly arrange themselves into a photo opportunity. As we exit the classroom to move on, Himself is overcome with emotion and we comment on how we have NO REASON to complain about working conditions. (Sorry for the pause, had to wipe a tear from my cheek) …a little more time passes and we are back in Roy’s “bomb” and heading to the waterfall. A steamy walk up hills, across slippery creeks and we end up at a very picturesque waterfall with rock pools at the base. We trek back the 1000m walk and back into Roy’s bomb to head to Hideaway Island. Here we had a relaxing few hours snorkeling the reef (very disappointing)…lots of damage, maybe from the cyclone , but me thinks it is damage from tourists who have trampled the reef . A few local ales and then we head back to Roy’s bomb to go back to the ship. WE bounce and bobble along through the peak hour traffic avoiding the dogs and chooks, get back on board and head to a bar for a Toblerone or two before dinner and the usual cruise ship night time entertainment .

Mrs Always Right……I’m sure Himself will post some snaps soon as we catch up on posts that we were unable to post on board.

Lazy Lifoe , Lazy Internet

Lazy Lifoe , lazy internet ….difficult to share posts as the internet is very slow …we have managed to transfer all photos from the camera to the surface and will try to share more later on today…..You all need to see what we consumed at the Chef’s Table degustation…..today we are heading over to Port Vila, have some craft supplies to deliver to a school wrecked by the cyclone earlier this year….oh and another reason for limited posts over recent days is …..Yes they do make Toblerone Cocktails!!!!!..

Mystery Island Remains a Mystery

Well here is a situation to interest you….tomorrow we are NOT going to Mystery Island as scheduled….why you ask? ….Because there is a cyclone!!!!!! What could be better than high seas and turbulence? ….a change in destination I say ….I do agree with the Captain on this one, we are off to Lifou instead …..will update the situation shortly….I am not the only Mrs Always Right …we also have a Captain who is Right!!

Lazy Daze … er, Days

IMG_1296 IMG_1299 IMG_1314 IMG_1318 IMG_1320 IMG_1323 IMG_1332 IMG_1333 IMG_1334 IMG_1335 IMG_1336

So our first Sea Day was rather lazy to say the least, sat for most of the morning around the indoor pool and had some quality conversation with Sharon and Byron…we rarely have the time when busy at home so this was great. Himself and I enjoyed numerous  refreshing drinks to “keep us cool” , me, I’m enjoying the Frozen Mojitos with an occasional bubbles. Staying in the Solarium area keeps us away from the temptation of the ice-cream machine and the mountains of food in the Windjammer Buffet, this too is good…..The Solarium has a small but adequate cafe and this suits us, especially as we indulge in the culinary delights of the Romeo and Juliet Dining room each evening. Himself is purposely trying new and different dishes , me I just choose what I think I will like. We have also explored the ship and young Georgia and I helped the ladies to a big lead in the Battle of the Sexes quiz where you yell out the answers to questions and score points for your gender, it is a cumulative score for the cruise. Ladies are well in the lead after Round 2!!!! Formal dining last night and a show of dancing that sent us to bed, not the best entertainment. Today(Tuesday, 2nd Sea Day) we avoided breakfast as we were doing a galley tour followed by a Champagne Brunch in the “Chops Grille” …this was a very interesting, eye opening and entertaining experience and OMG the buffet for our brunch …was devine. I will let himself explain why the photos have not been posted yet! After Brunch we have been having another lazy afternoon (and getting quite used to it) Our room is neat, shower good and hot (but small) Ohh …and just before I close ….it was my amethyst dress ring that split, the band …that is all that needs to be said about that …might just have to buy a new ring in Noumea, as we do have other shopping to do there!

ps: always check all usb leads with all devices before going away. *mutter mutter*

On the First Day, they scurried forth and …

Relaxed. Did nothing more strenuous than reading and wandering around. Well, so far that is. It’s only 9.36am after all. We’ve had breakfast, I was going to be good until I saw the potato gems 🙂 Pow! Good intentions out the porthole! Nothing like a hot, greasy breakfast after an afternoon of sampling rum and whisky. The shops are now open onboard, so I’m being dragged off to look. Lorraine split her ring yesterday. A fuller explanation will be done by Herself, shortly 🙂

Kitava Island

Is like a little jewel in the ocean. We lined up early to get our tender boarding passes and we were in the first boatload ashore. The trick in these places is to get ashore early, explore, then get back on the ship before it gets too hot. The locals put on a traditional welcome, a lei of frangipani flowers and a welcoming dance from the local kids. Fantastic! Everyone is so welcoming and happy to see us. We went for a short walk through the outskirts of the village and a local (not a Tour Guide) directed us toward the lookout. Lorraine started talking to her (Rosalind, as we shortly discovered) and we ended up with an unofficial guide to the grave of the founder of the island’s coconut plantations and a spectacular lookout. Rosalind’s English was perfect, she’d been to school locally and was chosen to go to the mainland and went through to Grade 10. Married now, with three children, she and her family live on what they grow, what they catch (fish), and if they have any money, what little they can buy from the “store” (very basic staples; rice, flour etc.). Lovely to talk with and a fount of knowledge about her island, it’s people and history. Kitava is a lovely, clean, and friendly place to visit.

Land Ahoy!

Atolua, our first land since leaving Brisbane. And it’s hot, damn hot! We walked from the port into the township, quick look around then fled back to the relative cool of the ship. Phew! Culturally, not too much to see, this is Milne Bay, site of various battles between the Japanese and Australian forces during WW II. Food aboard ship, service, drinks, are all at a pretty good standard, we’re enjoying ourselves 🙂

A stern Fat Yak .. and a sav-blanc, and a cc …

Friday morning: sunny and starting to feel the heat of the tropics, noice! Yesterday was a total relax and indulge day, hence the title. Drinking started with a Fat Yak on the back deck, The Oasis and just went on from there. Herself looked at some jewellery  – Tanzanite – and I offered to buy anything she liked, but there was nothing Herself was really taken with, most of the settings were in silver, Herself only wears gold! 😉 Trivia, a nice lunch, a sun bake, relaxing 🙂

Mrs Always Right here…..can’t believe how deep, deep blue the ocean is. Yesterday we watched a pod of dolphins frolic in the waves created by the ship, kids were amazed…so was I.  We are having school time every morning in a quiet secluded place called the Dome at the front of the ship…..really great learning for Georgia……she is great with her Magic Words….would be wonderful to have a classroom like this everyday!!!!  Tash and I are really looking forward to our Martini Masters again this afternoon…yesterdays was an absolute hoot…..laughed so much …..I’m sure the Martinis helped …we’ll take the menfolk with us today as the kids love going to Kids Club ….time for me to go as I have more relaxing to do…cheers!!

First day .. first impressions

It’s just after 8am on the first full day of the cruise. We left at 2pm, sailing down the Brisbane River and out into Morton Bay. The run across to Tangalooma and then up the coast past Caloundra was windy and overcast but the cocktails made up for that 🙂 Fruit Tingles are delicious, and Lorraine has a surprising capacity for Pina Colodas. Dinner last night was great, portion sizes were perfect and the taste was great! Bungy-ed the balcony door open and went to sleep to the sound of waves. Early rise as usual, brekkie at 6.30 and then moved to the very front of the boat, The Dome. I’ll see if Herself wants to chime in 🙂

A new journey is about to begin …

W443

In a first for P&O Cruises, Papua New Guinea will feature in two dedicated itineraries, with Pacific Dawn sailing from Brisbane to the turquoise waters of Milne Bay, where it will visit the local capital Alotau as well as the beautiful white sand beaches of Doini Island and the culturally-rich Trobriand Islands, also known as the Islands of Love, along the northern straits of the Bay.

Until next time … be dee be-deep :)

Hmmm, that title was meant to sound like the road runner, in reference to Herself’s last post 🙂 It was a great time, with great company. Special thanks, huge thanks go to Jenny for house sitting and minding our furry kids (plus chooks); without you the trip would not have been possible, you’re a gem! Herself asked me what the best part of the trip was, that’s easy; spending the time with you bub 🙂 xxx

That’s all Folks

Thud……thump…..back to reality. A great few days in Sydney catching up with the family, friends and all the fur, fins and feathers at the great Taronga Park Zoo.  After disembarking the great lady “Carnival Spirit” we headed up towards Central station to drop off our luggage before wandering around the city for a few hours. Thence it was onto the suburban train network to head to the old stomping grounds of Parramatta …wandered up to P.J. Gallaghers …… but to us from the old stomping grounds “The General Bourke” to catch up with great mates Wendy, Shonny and Adrienne  (whose “new” hair is sensational)…after this , into the Parramatta Thursday afternoon gridlock to make our way to the new look (to me anyway) Parramatta Eels Club. Here we met he family and had a great catchup in the Chinese Restaurant. Back to the hotel …a long day after being up at 4:30am  to view the majestic entry into Sydney Harbour….before too long it was Friday and we headed off to The Zoo….another superb day for all blah blah blah ……Dinner with the in-laws…then an early night before the journey home to sunny (NOT) Brisbane….. so over the last few weeks we have traveled with some great friends, relied upon another couple of treasured friends to keep the home fires burning and been on planes, trains, maxi-taxis, ships, tenders, buses but mostly feet. This experience has been another great one for the memory and the photos are just a snippet of our time abroard and aboard. I hope you have enjoyed sharing this with us through our blog, so until next time stay safe and consider doing it yourselves. HIMSELF will have his final say and post some last photos …bye till next time.

Happy Birthday Tash

So it’s our last sea day and a very important one at that….Happy Birthday Tash ……..HIMSELF has risen at crack of dawn(pre dawn actually) to secure a “hut” in the 18+ Serenity area …we will hold it till our hot stone massage at 8am when the birthday girl, will take over and  have a relaxing time for her birthday ….the plan is a tag event for the day so we all get a chance to “go into a private little world of our own” …..I am looking  forward to a few hours with the little cruisers having fun on the deck. Last night we had dinner in the dining room and the waiters entertained us “Gangman style” …after that was the Carnival Spirit Big Show…..New Orleans style…..I have to say the sets and costumes were equal to anything I have seen at the Lyric or any  other theatre ….it was SENSATIONAL……colourful, vibrant, energetic and entertaining to say the least. Miss G was captivated even though the poor little thing was tired , it still kept her enthralled. At the end of the show Tash got her off to bed while I scuttled down to the stage to get her some of the “magic” that exploded out of the finale (Metallic streamers)….this will be a gift for her this morning  …seas remain calm and weather remains fine ….I can sense a slight drop in temp as we approach Sydney …. off to another day doing whatever one does on a cruise …..mmmmm? what will that be?

Where am I up to?

The days are all merging now and I don’t even know what day it is……just consulted the time on the computer and me now thinks it is Tuesday afternoon  pre Captain’s elegant dining  night……me and elegant!!!…..ha ha …just doesn’t work does it?..a sad day on both sides of the world …RIP Margaret Thatcher and Annette Funicello…… memories for many  different reasons ….both ladies a part of my  life ……So glad we all watched the movie “The Iron Lady”…I am not interested in the politics! Annette, Frankie and you filled many of my Sunday afternoons when I was little …..You are still the most famous mouseketeer”…thank you…now back to me ……yesterday was Mare, the only place on this cruise that I hadn’t been before and it was lovely …..the same but very different in its uniqueness….another island where pirates prevailed in their pirate caves…but don’t worry Georgia and I got them all…and found some treasure on the beach…..the afternoon was spent on the golf course (putt putt of course) …test of grammar there…..after golf …guess what ….some cocktails …fancy that…… and then a 5 star dining treat…..more like 7 star …the service was sensational and the attention to detail was extreme ….I had 5 courses of exquisite  food …I even had Squid ink brittle!!!!! this sumptuous dining was overlooking the ocean at the aft….following on from this we went to the cabaret show before going to the 18+ hypnosis show …..my cheeks and sides are still sore from laughing!!! Martian talk…..body parts no longer there ….18+ activity triggered by music etc etc etc …a real hoot ….then sleep and another day at sea……spa, trivia, colour-in time, lounging and you guessed it ….cocktails .don’t  know which ones I like best pina colada, kiss on the lips, strawberry daiquiri, midori splice, pina daiquiris. kiss on the splice, midori lips…..oh whatever!…must  go “elegant” ?????!!!!!….where do I start?

Mare Island

Mare, last of the islands we’ll visit this trip. A bit overcast when we landed, but there was still an island band playing gospel music. The only instruments they had was a guitar and two cardboard boxes, plus their own beautiful melodic voices. We hopped on a bus and drove 16 kms to the beach, long, white coral sands and a fair bit of coral reef to snorkel. The locals had set up little stalls all along the beachfront, but after seeing chicken and fish skewers sitting out in the open, uncooked, we decided to pass on their cuisine 🙂 Lorraine and I went for a walk along the beach while Ian, Tash, and the kids played sand castles. A few showers of rain convinced us to head back onto the bus and from there to the boat. We had a small lunch and I laid down for an afternoon nap. Lorraine went with the Watts and played mini golf. Dinner was special, we went to the silver service restaurant and njoyed a fantastic 5 course dinner. Grilled Portobello mushroom, oxheart tomato with crumbled blue vein, and then half a lobster tail and half a fillet mignon (surf and turf) … groan .. absolutely delicious! The servings weren’t that big, but after the chocolate sampler and international cheeses for desert (plus a couple of glasses of champagne) we were rather full 🙂 On to a variety show followed by an adults only version of the hypnotist show, bloody hysterical!  I’ll leave it for Herself to go into more detail. We set sail for Sydney, only two days left of what has been an unforgettable experience.

Peeves, P#*^ offs, Peculiar and Pathetic

Yes thought it was time to let you know about the other side of the story….so in no particular order here is the list.

1. Women who are size 20/22 in size 14 clothing  (or should I say “not in”)

2. Hairy men in budgy smugglers.

3. Too many cocktails on the list for one day.

4. Those greedy guts who pile their plate to the ceiling and eat a quarter of it.

5. The lazy loafs who use the elevator for one floor.

6. The prissy pants who parade all day thinking “Look at me, Look at me”

7. ATMs that won’t take mastercard (that was in Noumea)

8. Unsupervised children at the ice cream machine .

9. Unsupervised children in the pool.

10 The poor little sods who are dumped in care and don’t want to be there.

11. When the wave from a passing ferry hits the tender just as you are stepping off.

12. The karaoke contestants who THINK they can sing.

13. The sad sacks who whinge about the breeze, the chairs, the volume, the sand, the day the night, the I don’t want to be happy.

14.  The ten times explained simple instructions for the not so intelligent.

15. The Miss Attitudes who treat the delightful Downs Syndrome guest with contempt…shame on you!

16. Having powerboards confiscated and only one powerpoint (not happen to us though)

17. The push for professional photography.

This is not a whinge it is a series of observations, in some ways I love these things, just  a bit of a laugh really.

I LOVE PEOPLE WATCHING

and besides ….I am Mrs Always Right!!!!!

Yes I’m Still Here

Yes, I know I haven’t written for a while ….so here goes ….can I remember it all?  Back to Lifoe …all I can say is how great it is to see wildlife in its natural state ….the snorkelling at the bay was colourful, vibrant and relaxing all at the same time. To float around with a mask (inside smeared with spit to stop the fog) looking at Angel fish, Nemoes with a purple stripe, black and white striped fish, looooong yellow fish, tiny neon fish, parrot fish etc etc etc by the thousands all swimming in amongst clams and brain coral and other reef matter is just amazing, to say the least. Then to top that off the other side of the island put on another display of marine life to amaze the onlookers (us) ….sea turtles bobbing up and down to get their breath and surf the waves …..just great.  When we returned to the ship Mr and Mrs W…. went back to the island for an island tour and ale or two and myself, Master O and Miss G had a great afternoon on the ship. First a movie…well half a movie “Dolphin Tale” ……then onto the Lido Deck for icecream, music, thong games and fun ……a trip to the lolly shop too. Cocktails too….red ones, white ones, red and white  and ?????? whatever!!!! Skip a few or more  hours ….and here we are ….Noumea…Some places are jewels in the Pacific …and some places are just places in the Pacific…..we did have a race up to the dock with the P&O Pacific Jewel though……onto the dock and off to explore (blah blah blah) back on ship ….Lido deck fun again …..Miss G in the spa , wrinkly toes and fingers and Master O knows where the ice cream machine is ……the stewards know where the cocktail drinkers are!!!!! blue ones, yellow ones and red and yellow ones! As the ship prepares to leave Noumea, along comes Grandpa Toot tugboat ….what a show off …….side ways , then circles , then donuts on the sea …a real display ….but a real showoff too……Girls night out !!!!!!! Boys on kiddy duty!!!!!  What a hoot …..after dinner (and more cocktails in the Empire Dining Room …….off to see the hypnotist show …..hilarious!!!!!!!!! Grown adults acting like gold fish, skipping like Rocky, so much laughing , went a little hoarse…..can’t wait till the over 18s hypnosis show tonight…will be a hoot! Anyhow …another trip on the tender awaits ….Mare …will let you know !!!!!

Sister to The Gold Coast and Nice

No, not nice, Nice, in France 🙂 Noumea! Favourite liberty port of the PT-73 and today’s port. No tenders today, pulled right up to the wharf by Lil Toot and Grandfather Toot and walked off onto to the Port of Noumea. A shuttle bus dropped us off at the Passenger Terminal where we jumped on a $5 get-on get-off tour bus. Around the island to the Aquarium … doesn’t open until 10am! OK, let’s wander along the beach and play a bit, sand castles and fun 🙂 The aquarium was fun for the kids and fascinating for us as well. Back on the bus and further around to a bunch of cafes. Got off and bought a milkshakes for the kids and a Number One (local beer) for the kidults. More wandering around, gelato being eaten, chocolate being smeared on face, generally having fun. Back on the bus with young Master Oliver decided it was time for a sleep, no matter the erratic antics of our bus driver or the steadily increasing noise from it’s passengers. A shuttle bus ride, up the gangplank (arrrgh!) and all pirates are safely on board imbibing the days cocktail and watching the ship prepare to depart. Three hair raising (and ear piercing!) toots later we’re on our way to Mare, our last island … this trip!

Loyal, lovely, luscious Lifou

Lifou, formerly Loyalty Isle. Our second island, second chance to break out the flippers and snorkel gear. Early morning tender across and then about a fifteen minute walk through steamy jungles, populated by mysterious monsters and giant pigs! Well, a hot walk along an island road, Miss G’s imagination supplied the rest 🙂 There was a decrepit enclosure with some island pigs inside, Miss G. had to go talk to them and apparently they talked back! This meant the rest of the walk was interspersed with frequent snorts as she demonstrated how the pigs and her talked!
Onto the bay, dropped our gear and walked down some freshly constructed concrete stairs and into the warm waters of the bay. WOW! Fish, coral, colour everywhere! Exquisite, almost as good as what Lorraine and I saw on our Wilson Island trip (Herself reckons it was better in some places). Georgia also went snorkelling with Ian and Tash, she loved it! A moment of panic while we where all way out meant she refused to put her mask back on so I piggy backed her in to shore. A packet of twisties soon cheered her up and we made our way back through the jungle, complete with side trip to say goodbye tpo the pigs, and back on board. Had a late lunch and then stayed on the Lido Deck listening to a fantastic band and drinking … um, I think I had a few pina coladas .. rums … red wines … phew! Great rock and roll, 70’s, 80’s, my type of music 🙂 Early night, ready for Noumea tomorrow.

Pirates and Treasure

A great day on the Isle of Pines started with a few minor/major issues. One of the Tender Boats decided to blow an engine…..no real drama  just a slow start to getting everyone on to the  Isle……all good after a couple of hours and we were walking on talcum sanded beaches. Prior to that I had a blowout on the right flip flop……got a new pair last night at the shop …so also all good. Isle of Pines was at its best, indigenous people dressed in their native attire, danced and the ladies made us hats and headbands. Georgia was very concerned as to where their teeth were……after a short stroll to the snorkelling bay Pirate Number 20 (Georgia with her tender number sticker 20) saw some attacking pirates and jumped on her pirate ship (Aunty Rain)  and set off to the pirate cave …along the way we found diamonds (pumice), emeralds (leaves), gold (coral) and a skull (hollow coconut)…. we seized the treasure then Pirate 20 went to Pirate island (Tash) …..Wayne and I snorkelled for a bit and as Mr Right said in his post we had a relaxing afternoon on Lido deck….. I now hear the tenders in preparation for Lifoe so will be off to get our stickers (wonder what pirate number she will be today!)

Will let  you know

Pining away ..

The Isle of Pines, our first landfall on the cruise. Wow. Early (oh dark hundred) this morning we awoke to see lights off the port bow, land! The ship slid through the passage between the islands on its way to the Isle of Pines. Initially overcast, the day soon brightened up and showed the island off in the best light. A bit of fun getting the tenders going, but by 11am we were on the island. Really pretty place, good snorkelling and lots of fun 🙂 We were back on board by about 3pm, the girls needed their cocktail of the day (something weird looking, weird sounding, and served in another disco ball <g>). We relaxed on the Lido deck for the rest of the afternoon, drinking, nibbling, and watching the kids play. Quite an exhausting day in all, but heaps of fun 🙂 Off out to sea, then loop back in to Lifou tomorrow morning. Heaps of photos, I’ll pop a few up. Herself is in bed already, worn out, poor dear 😉 Actually I won’t be far behind! OK, seems to be an issue with posting photos, I’ll check it out in the morning. Photos now loaded 🙂

Land Ahoy

Early morning…..sailed very close to the islands of New Caledonia through the small hours……enroute to Isle of Pines……..overcast today, but not raining …might rain ….will have to wait and see….Looking forward to snorkelling today……Captain’s “elegant” dinner last  night …. then a few hours taking  in the on board entertainment:- guitarists, pianists and several bands scattered throughout the ship……a great variety of music types and styles. Seas have been extremely calm , not much rocking or rolling felt at all…..I am impressed with the evening turn down and the skilful folding of the towels..so far a walrus, a polar bear (white towel) may have been a grizzly bear! …and last night an elephant. This morning HIMSELF suggested that our room would be a great sized caravan,  yeah right!!!! what are we going to pull it with ? A Mac truck? Now time for breaky and a tender to the isle a little later on …..cheers till next post.

Wet T-Shirt contest!!

Um .. no. Instead, they had a “hairiest chest” contest! Men’s chests that is. Lorraine and Tash snorted, giggled, and drank their way through the contest, their comments getting louder and more pointed with each cocktail – served in a disco ball!- consumed. I retired very early, my eyeballs were hurting. Sitting in a corner far away from gyrating old blokes showing off more fur than bigfoot and reading my book was much more relaxing … the few bundy and cokes I had didn’t hurt either! After (or maybe it was before, my memory is hazy for some strange reason ..) there was Horse Racing. On a ship. In the middle of the sea. Riiiight. Get 6 wooden horses (old fashioned type), con 6 audience members (um .. guess who? see the photos below!) to be “jockeys” and then throw three dice to see which numbered horse moved forward! Bit slow, so time to retire with my book again. Oh, and some more bundy 🙂 From there to lunch .. then time with the kids on the deck, dancing, playing, generally having fun (and cocktails … and bundy). On to dinner – great food!- then to the show, a Jazz Night. Fantastic! A few cointreaus finished the night off. Almost in bed, and getting ready for landfall tomorrow – The Isle of Pines! Stay tuned, more adventures to come 🙂

Feeling guilty?…….Not!

So one day at sea done and dusted…now what did we do?  A lazy breakfast followed by a stroll around this ship that is like a suburb…..then a hot stone massage ….ahhhh…..a bit more relaxing before a divine lunch with a couple of drinks…..a spa….a couple more drinks ….then cocktail of the day served in a huge orange puffer fish…but the cocktail was called “Yellow Bird”……go figure…..we minded the kids last night….proud moment at the comedy club …Miss G …first time on stage …..star of the show!!!!..    Now to decide what to do today…relax and indulge I guess…..will keep you posted …..if I can be bothered.  Pufferfish photo up soon ….stay tuned

A new comedian is born!

Well .. a four year old telling a “knock knock” joke 🙂 Ian and Tash went out for dinner tonight, so we got the kids (yay us! no hardship at all <g>). There was a Family Comedy Night on so along we went. Lovely comedian from Caboolture (lots of QLDers on this trip!) told some watered down and family type jokes, then got volunteers up to tell their jokes. Georgia (with me prompting, sort of like a sock puppet) said “knock, knock”, the whole audience went “who’s there?” [stage fright – deer in headlights look – Uncle Wayne whispers “boo”] Georgia bellows out BOO! Audience: boo who? Georgia: awww, don’t cry 🙂 Lots of genuine laughter and cries of “cute!” Audience votes .. every kid (about 6) gets a Gold Medal! It’s being worn now, very proudly 🙂 Great day, now for a nights sleep ready for the morrow.

The lullaby of the Sea … and the next morning .. day .. afternoon!

We love the cabin! Deck 7, so we’re nice and high, and a balcony 🙂 Last night we occy-strapped the balcony door open and slept with the sound of the waves interspersed with the regular thudding of the massive diesels. The gentle rocking didn’t hurt at all and we (ok, I ) woke at the usual time, 4.45am. Herself tried hard for another hour to sleep in (snore?? no, no, never! tell ’em you’re dreamin’ !). We started the day with a light breakfast at 7am and then went to our hot stone massage at 8am. 75 minutes later we both oozed out and flopped our way back to the room for recovery (read – snooze – or at least that state just before you drift off!) Went along to the Captains Briefing – all about what ports we go to and what to do when you get there. Boring. I showed my disdain for the lecture method by promptly falling asleep … until a sharp jab in the ribs bought me back to reality 🙂 Upstairs (updecks doesn’t sound quite right ..) to the bar. Canada Royal and Dry to start the day’s sampling of alcohol .. yum! Lunch in the restaurant and then the “Serenity” the over-18’s portion of the boat (the very back .. message there?) for more sampling and conversation with some delightful young things … in the hot tub. Lorraine was there!! Besides, I’m apparently at the age where I’ve invisible to said delightful young things anyway 😛 Married, not dead! I’ll leave with some more photos and undoubtedly comments from Herself when she deigns to get online 😉

Not great photos from the Surface Pro’s built in camera, but I’ll post some better shots soon. Herself will probably add more shortly.

Where next?

Well this is it, time to think forward to the planning of the next big one. The bags are unpacked, washing all done, and it is basically back to normal life. A rude shock heading our way tomorrow as we return to work. Wayne heads off to new premises and I head off to the final term mania, testing, reports and graduation. Can’t close off without thanking those who made it all possible. Thanks Pam and Poppa Ted, Tash and Ian and Mum/Nanna Phyl who “kept the home fires burning”. Izzy and Ozzy continued to give forth their daily eggs and Bundy and Chardy were well cared for. We missed all the Brisbane wet weather and are not sad about that. Thanks to those of you who followed the blog and to those of you who commented and kept us company along the way. The blog has given us a great travel diary and something we can go back to. Wayne has almost organised the photos, they are attached to our personal website http://www.murrumba.net/canada Enjoy, we did !!!

Are we there yet?

and the answer is NOOOOOO! We boarded the plane in LA to then sit on the tarmac for over an hour, they said some guff about loading freight….. anyhow just added more time to the cramped conditions…. and that meant we were not going to meet our connecting flight to Brisbane …so whilst we were in the air Qantas already moved us to the 12:05 flight (replacing the 10:05am) …so we get to Sydney, clear immigration and customs, transfer to domestic terminal and yep you guessed it …Qantas Club….and the first announcement we hear….our original flight to Brissy was delayed…we would have made it!!!!  Ah well …what can we do? Wayne is currently catching up on the Australian news. We should be home by 1:30pm Brisbane time ….here’s hoping.

LAX

Hear the song, “LA International airport, where the big jet engines roar…..” well that is where we are now, in Qantas Club….blogging…cause we can! Flight an hour late leaving JFK but landed on time. Bit bumpy along the way, They need to fix their pot holes, must be the same maintenance crews as the Sydney road crews. BUT, glad to say, very smooth landing. Changing to a bigger plane, leaving here 10 before 12 (American way of saying the time) for us Aussies….10 to 12 (midnight)….hopefully the pothole crew have fixed them over the big blue Pacific. Himself slept most of the way so maybe it will be movie time this leg…. see ya …here’s the boss man.

Back in the Qantas Club in LAX, been here a few times before (can’t match the Kyle man though!!) We’ve had more nibblies and more wine, ready for the 14 1/2 hour trip back, then the transfer to a domestic hop up to Brisbane (I upgraded us to Business for that, a little luxury for the last last part). Time for one last loo visit then we’ll make our way to the gate and try to get comfortable.  Ooroo!

Tomorrow

will be lost to us, forever. We leave today, Wednesday, and arrive in Sydney on Friday morning. Where did Thursday go? It disappears as we cross that imaginary line, the International Date Line. “Tomorrow” was also the title of the last episode of the West Wing, one of our favourite American shows. So this is our last episode, leaving the USA and returning to Australia. This morning we went to Grand Central Terminal, here’s the last photos of our holiday.

PS. He must be getting tired! This morning we also went to see the Rockefellar Centre, that is where the ice rink is, and we also were part of the street crowd for the NBC Today Show, mmmmmm, the topic of the moment was “overeating”, was that coincidental or was it a message for us. Himself did “G’Day Mate” the hosts, particularly the weather guy “Big AL”. As we shut down the pink computer (our constant travel companion) the sky above New York City is crystle clear….a great day for flying….see ya guys and thanks for staying connected to us while we toured. Planes, Trains and Automobiles

Yep, it is our last /travel day, although we don’t start flapping our wings till 7pm tonight. So a couple of hours this morning, thought we would go to Grand Central Railway Station, for the “train” part of the title, before a freshen up, check-out, and “automobile” journey to JFK Airport, then a “plane” to LA (6 hours), transit, touchdown in Sydney 8am, transit, then Brisbane at 10:35am (hopefully on time) …that is 11:35am Sydney time. So it will be a big day, no doubt, queues, queues and yet more queues. Should have Bundy and Chardy kisses by midday Friday. Expect another post though, as himself will, no doubt, need to geek at the airports.

Oh What a Night!

What must one do whilst in New York? One must attend a show on Broadway. We did. Jersey Boys. Row E, 109 and 110. Five rows from the stage, right in the middle! So it cost a little, big deal eh. This show is …. FAN-bloody-TASTIC!!! 2 and 1/2 hours that held us spellbound with the story and toe tapping, singing under our breath with all the songs. Go, if you can. go even if you can’t, it’s great 🙂 We’re all pysched up and think we might go back out and wander down to Times Square one last time, or go up and see the Dave Letterman show. I’m changing into my Wallabies jersey (or is that joisey now?), the yellow really stands out on the big screen down at Times Square! Oooroo!!

Posted in Canada & US Trip, New York | 1 Comment

Imagine That!

Well here we are relaxing a bit before “Jersey Boys” ….our last full day on vacation. We had a slightly later start this morning, emptied bags and “packed/repacked” in readiness for homeward journey. (we had to buy an extra bag…not for my purchases as good things come in small packages). Then went to a local deli for breakfast, visited M&M World (WOW) and then jumped on the open top bus for yet another tour (they are such good value) …this time “up town”. So, off to the Columbus Memorial, the Lincoln Centre, the architecture in this part of NY is amazing, lovely old buildings. Then, The Dakota Apartments, where John Lennon was shot. Wow, right there just to the left of us. No need to say anymore. We then proceeded past a few more interesting places like Lauren Bacall’s current residence and the like and got some info on the price of rent etc. Past  some university buidings, hospitals and into the Jewish area, then into Harlem, the Apollo Theatre, this is where Billy Holiday, Stevie Wonder, James Brown and Michael Jackson got their break. We drove down Martin Luther King Jnr Ave and Malcolm X Ave. The HUGE number of Baptist churches in one small area is amazing and apparently they are all full on Sundays with the congregations all dressed up (there are over 400). As we continued on the tour we decided to jump off and (Let’s talk like a tourist) do Central Park. We, wait for it, WALKED again all through Central Park taking snaps of the reservoir, the Great Lawn ( where the greats have performed, ie The Supremes, Carole King, Elton John, Garth Brooks, Diana Ross, Bon Jovi and of course the famous Simon and Garfunkel )..did you know that Bruce Springsteen was refused permission for a free concert because it was expected that 1.3 million would try to attend. We saw and strolled through the Shakespeare Garden, the Turtle pond, then …Strawberry Fields, a place set aside to remember John Lennon, there is a mosaic  of “imagine” and as his birthday was only last Saturday 9th Oct, there were many people still paying tribute to him.  From here we went to the Terrace and then walked down The Mall, tree lined with American Elm trees and just lovely …here we met “Sean Penn” …. a space cadet who  hates people with lenses, he wants to swap all lenses with guns and shoot the people, I chose not to photogrph him! Then we wandered further down the Mall (photo, photo, photo) and got the tour bus back to the hotel. While we were in Central Park we HAD to go to the gift shop, and I’m glad we did as Wayne found a lovely “Imagine “token for his bag and we found something very special for Vicki. On our way back to the hotel we also found a shoe shop, so I got a pair of “Fit Flops” so comfortable. So now we are getting ourselves in the mind for “Jersey Boys”.  Sherry (no Canadian Club, but close), then I’m sure I “Can’t take my eyes off you (the performers) , and of course tonight “Big girls WILL cry” ….but seriously, “Oh what a night” it will be , and not late December back in 63 but Mid October 2010…and to see it on Broadway, how cool is that?!!!! Now, I’m off to get more dry ginger ale , here’s Mr Right to do the photos.

Hic! Photos follow, then off to Joisey Boys!

Lullaby of Broadway

Well, here we go… Mr Right is again too tired to report the day’s activities, just quietly , we have walked a million miles the last few days. There is just so much to do in NY. Our new friends, George and Julie, have been here three times before and still need more time. Firstly, for those wondering, New York is completely safe, at no time have we felt worried or uneasy, other emotions yes, but no negative feelings. Today we woke to another bright sunny day (sorry about that Brisbanians) and we headed off early to do the open top “Down Town” tour…did the loop around (about 2 hours) and had a very good guide who really pitched the entire commentry at us , personal guide, how cool. Anyhow on the second time around we got off at Macy’s for the Columbus Day Sales , didn’t buy anything but socks! What a mad house, like our Boxing Day sales (end of season too) We then went to see Soho, and finish the shopping list, yay!!!!! All done! Then due to the Columbus Day Parade the streets were closed off and the hop on hop off  bus was rerouted, so we had to WALK for miles to catch the bus …how appropriate, the next guide explained how 20 blocks is 26 minutes walking (as if we didn’t know that!!) He also explained the way the streets and avenues are numbered and how everything is so simple ….and take it from me, it is. 5th Avenue splits the city into East and West, North / South are avenues. then you have numbers running east/west …like 34th STREET (remember the miracle?) , and, if you want to find a specific address then it is that number of blocks from 5th Avenue …for example 7o8 West 38th street is 7 blocks west of 5th Avenue on 38th (and they are consecutive)…Great eh?????Today we also saw where Hugh Heffner, Donald Trump, Beyonce, Ricky Martin and Al Pacino live ( posers, and I bet they never clean the toilet!!!!) We saw the Waldorf Astori Hotel, The United Nations,  NBC, Carnegie Hall, etc ….Now , I have to say  something about Ground Zero, Wayne just thought it as a “place” …I however had a different reponse, I’ve seen it 3 or 4 times now , and the hairs stand up on the back of my neck. The site  is basically a construction zone , BUT, there seems to be a huge delay in getting things done, I think that is sad, how can some people move on?   Also the neighbouring buildings are actually being taken down, floor by floor , as the toxins from the site have infiltrated and thus, made the buildings, toxic. Then on top of that we found out that …years after the tragedy, human remains have been located on the roofs of nearby buildings, don’t mean to be negative, but how tragic is that? Families looking for their loved ones and finding out years later that they tried to jump to safety. In the centre of the site is the place where the rescue workers raised the American flag in a similar way to the flag raising at the Iwo Jima Monument, we posted in our Washington post. Anyhow , on a brighter note, last night we went up to the Empire State Building and saw New York by night woohoo, glad we didn’t go tonight as we have just been struck by a violent electrical storm …good night to be blogging!!! Now tomorrow is the last full day of our vacation, so we are changing our “state of mind”….we are ready to come home … I miss Bundy and Chardy heaps, and we have a new little person to meet. We also can’t wait to see Georgia and see how much she has grown. We have plenty to do tomorrow …including, seeing Jersey Boys tomorrow night, 5th row, dead centre, in NEW YORK, how good is that ?????…So why the title of the post: “The lullaby of Broadway”? That is the sound of sirens all through the night. …you go to sleep to the sound of sirens and the deep honking sounds of the New York Fire Dept…… oh, and yes, it was Tiffany’s!!!!

Over to Mr Right for his input …… Love Lorraine XXXX

She Who Must Be Obeyed has written another novel 🙂 And, as before, she has covered everything we did. Our feet are really burning, but it’s been fantastic, New York is just so different from anything either of us has seen before. I’m going to add some photos now, the entire collection of photos will be posted on our website after we get home. Ooroo!

ps: I promised Lorraine diamonds from Tiffany’s, she got them 🙂

It’s after midnight, sore feet and empty wallet

Biiig day (again). After this morning’s wallet/credit card beating, we resumed our walking exercises. By 2pm we were tired, so back to the hotel for a reviving (read- numbing of feet) Canadian Club or three. We met some friends at 6pm for yet another walk to Astro’s on 56th and 6th. Great food and really cheap. After that, it was yet another walk, this time downtown to 5th and 33rd to visit King Kong’s tower: The Empire State Building. We saw a short movie (complete with one of those bucking carriage ride thingos – simulated helicopter ride, Lorraine just directed me to write … mutter, mutter) then into the lift and up to the 80th floor! Oh, either we wait for the second elevator to the 86th floor (where the viewing whatamacallit is – observation deck, herself just pointed out) for 30 minutes or you can walk up 6 floors (about 18 flights of stairs) …we did the stairs .. sore feet type stuff, eh. Viewed the city at night and made appropriate noises. Came back down, walked home, sorer feet. We did at least 70 blocks today. More in the morning, plus photos, night.

ps: Grant, use google to find out what store 🙂

5th Avenue

Just got back from shopping on 5th Avenue New York, Lacoste…$, Tommy Hilfinger, Sony….$ , Gucci, Pravda, Mikimoto, Chanel, Bvlgari and a few others. Then while we were standing on the corner of 5th and 57th, eating  a bagel and drinking a coffee, we turned around and realised that behind us was a very special store that we HAD to go in to. So,  we went inside and after about an hour, $$$$$$. 🙂

Times Square is …..

Amazing, exciting, electrifying, weird, busy, fun … and very crowded! After dinner we (Lorraine and I, plus another 2 couples) went wandering down to Times Square. Our hotel is in a brilliant location, West 53rd St and 7th Ave! It’s really hard to describe Times Square, you honestly need to be here to start appreciating it. More tomorrow, I’m tired and off to bed 🙂

Goodbye, Farewell and Amen.

End tour. Finis.

Tours like this are made even better by the people you meet. We have made a number of new friends and enjoyed ourselves tremendously. The Tour Director, Jason Pawchuk, was an organisere par excellence; anticipating problems and proactively advising us. Thanks Jason, for your time and trouble (and putting up with a noisy, unruly bunch of Aussies). Our driver, Rod Weaver, was always helpful and courteous and as the tour progressed his personality and sense of fun and humour really made the trip even more enjoyable;he became a good mate to a lot of us, onya Hot Rod 🙂

There was one American on the tour, an older chap called Nelson Katz. Nels is the first to admit he’s getting on and isn’t quite as quick as he used to be, but that never slowed or stopped him. In fact, at the “Farewell Dinner” here in New York, Nels was made an Honorary Australian; given a certificate, a badge, a bag of eucalyptus lollies, an aussie $5 note and (huge thanks to George!!!) a very nice polo with a map and Australia on it!

I’ll put another post up shortly about our just finished walk down to Times Square, I just thought it was really important to say how good Jason and Rod were.

Start Spreading the News …..

….I want to be a part of it New York, New York. Yes we are  in the Big Apple, travelled from Washington DC today, stopped off at a park with a great view of NY and had photo time in front of the big girl …the one with the 34 foot waist…the Statue of Liberty. We had a tour group photo and then set off to NY proper, (don’t ever complain about traffic again) …didn’t take long to realise that we will have our necks craned a lot over the next few days ……tonight we have our farewell dinner with our tour group…. it has been a great trip for us, we have met some lovely people, shared some laughs, seen some incredible sights and learnt much about Canada and the USA. Tonight after the dinner we will sort out our bags and prepare for the New York shopping spree, sightseeing and show time. The days are flying by ever so quickly and it is  hard to believe that we are at this point of our trip. I must admit though that I am thinking about Georgia, Bundy, Chardy, The Girls(Izzy and Ozzy) far more often now …oh and the rest of you….. so it must be nearing time  to head home …BUT not just yet …we have to do the New York bit.

WOW  WOW WOW…another day of mind blowing American nostagia …where do I begin? Well, we woke up, showered, dressed, breakfast then boarded the bus for the city tour, local guide, we headed off to The White House, they had already had breakfast, and so had we, so we said “Maybe next time” ..a few photos in Lafayette Park and back on the bus. Next stop the WW2 MEMORIAL ….I don’t have the words to explain this, let the photo tell the story (a picture paints a thousand words)…from this memorialyou look back to the Washington MEMORIAL..a very distinctive landmark on the skyline….then to acknowledge the nature of the area a squirrel provided us with a natural MEMORIAL …..next stop the Vietnam MEMORIAL ….here Wayne changed roles with the guide…..the statue was of three soldiers, a black American soldier, a white American soldier and an “all others” American soldier. The statue shows many of the “mistakes the Americans made in this war, as you can see they are not covered by their clothing, thus the risk from insect related diseases, the display of dog tags, on open shirt chests, causes them to refect in the sun, thus seen by the enemy, some wore their dogtags on their shoes, but the greatest problem in this war was landmines…foot blown off body …no ID!!! Also the Americans chose to wear repellant….which has an aroma …not a good idea! Beside this statue was the “Reflecting Wall” MEMORIAL where all the names of the deceased soldiers or “lost in battle” soldiers are inscribed on a reflective stone, thus the living are reflected by the  past .  Nearby to this was the statue as a MEMORIAL to the women of the war. Another moving statue ….from here we climbed the marble steps to the Abraham LINCOLN MEMORIAL…. a 19  foot white statue (there i sa reason for this, to be revealed later) and also there is an inscription of his second inaugeration speech…. in front of this memorial is the Reflecting Pool you will remember from Forrest Gump when Jenny runs to Forrest through the water….at the extreme opposite end to this is the Capitol….although it is a bus drive away …so off we go….an impressive building that is heavily secured and it is only from the West Lawn that you can view it. All inaugerations since Ronald Reagan have taken place on this “front” so as to enable more people to witness it. From here we wen to the Air andSpace Smithsonian Museum….we saw the Hubble Space Telescope (replica), the USA/USSR docking station, Neil Armstrong Buzz Aldrin and the Apollo langing module “Eagle”…and heaps more ….I touched a moon rock!!!!.. Our next visit wasthe American History Smithsonian…. Judy Garlands Red Slippers from Wizard of OZ, the “slapstick” Fonzie’s Jacket, Kermit, Archie Bunker’s chair, Phyllis Diller’s wig etc etc …much of this Smithsonian was dedicated to the Presidents….and their cause…..AS  you can see they wanted me to be President and I told them how we are supposed to be “moving forward”…we saw the  Watergate filing cabinet, Julia’s kitchen (Meryl Streep movie), C3PO, etc etc etc…After that we walked some more to see the Ford Theatre (where Lincoln was assassinated) and the house across the road where he died. Then our feet told us “enough is enough”so we went back to the hotel before going to an Italian Restaurant for dinner (glutenous servings that no one could eat)…..A BIG day …tomorrow off to New York …this means things are coming to an end …. our next 4 nights are in the big apple and then home to our own beds and bathroom…we won’t have to analyse the plumbing any more. Here’s Mr Right … take care Mrs Always Right XXXX

As Lorraine mentioned above, Lincoln’s statue is 19′ tall. There is a statue on top of the Capitol Building that is 19’6” tall, that statue is a figure, called “Freedom”. Legislation was passed so that no statue in Washington can ever be taller than 19′, therefore nothing is greater than freedom. Done and dusted, we bought a 1.75 litre bottle of Canadian Club on the way back, for only $15!!, and some Canada Dry .. drinkies! Ooroo.

Stars and Stripes

Today I think I felt “something” like what it is like to be an American. We started the day visiting the National Constitution Center ((er not re) just beside the Liberty Bell) and watched a very moving presentation, with live narration, about the history of the constitution. Following on from that, we browsed the actual museum, showing the history of America until present day. The Hall of  Statues was very impressive. Am now realising what an influential and important person Benjamin Franklin was, and yet he was never a president. We all owe him! After that on to Washington DC….WOW….. it really does have a special feel about….like being in Canberra but on a much larger scale (of course). First stop Arlington Cemetery, are the hairs up on the back of your neck? …should be! VERY, VERY moving…row after row after row of  white headstones …..we walked to the grave of JFK with Jackie beside and two deceased children, turnaround and there on the skyline, The Washington Memorial and the Lincoln Memorial. Next we rode the Tourmobile to the Tombs of the unknown soldiers (WW1 , WW2 and Vietnam Wars) but the Vietnam War grave is empty as due to DNA testing he was identified. Our tourguide suggested the best place for us to watch the changing of the guard and that was really something. Wayne has the whole thing on video, so you will see that. Again, very very moving. We reboarded the tourmobile and heard the rest of the commentry…there are 3 Australians buried in Arlington. As we waited for the rest of our group we looked at the other displays , one a very interesting and tear provoking recount of the bugler at JFK’s funeral and how he “quivered” on the 6th note and now, as a mark of respect, all buglers now purposely make the same mistake. There are in fact 20-30 funerals a day at Arlington. The flag is put to halfmast , half an hour before the first funeral of the day and remains that way until half an hour after the last funeral for the day. After that we did a small drive around and checked into the hotel …then we went to dinner at a great little restaurant (had crab cakes) before going on an  “Illumination Tour”….We went to the  JFK Performing Arts Center, saw the Hall of States (flags for all states), then the Hall of Countries (flags for all countries) and went to a huge terrace to see DC by night, the monuments really have a Greek look about them, on purpose, to respect democracy.  Then on the coach for one of the most moving and breathtaking man made stuctures I have seen …. The Iwo Jima Memorial …. it is commemmorating a battle (along the lines of our Gallipoli campaign) …..but this is the flagraising that was duplicated at the Twin Towers and other significant events that call for a patriotic flag raising. The memorial was illuminated and I think that seeing it at night made it more special. So I hope you can see what I mean by feeling patriotic today, it gets to you. …And we all know, the Americans are pretty good at that. Over to himself to add to the post and organise the photos. See ya …Lorraine XXX

Just a little more, we visited a statue dedicated to the Irish, then took photos of each other doing a “Rocky” victory dance .. not on the steps of the museum as he did, but on the bank of the Delaware. The main thing was we danced in Philly 🙂 Arlington was moving, so many graves, so many lives wasted .. I left earlier than the rest, you know how these things affect me. I didn’t serve in wartime as these blokes did, but I did serve. Wayne.

Ding-a-ling time

Philadelphia is a lovely city, not too tall, and the architecture is superb. We travelled down from Boston  .  The morning was pretty wet but we were travelling along a highway, so little impact on us. We are amazed at the number of freight trucks sitting idle in parking lots.  Maybe the recession has impacted on this.  The weather cleared by lunch and we were able to see Manhattan in the distance as we passed by New York.(in the far distance). We watched a video as we came in to Philly. It starred Nicholas Cage, National Treasure. It was an introduction to buildings we were to see in Philly. On arrival in Philly we went around the city. Saw the “Love” statue and the fountain behind was purple, not sure why. We drove past, but were not able to run up the “Rocky” steps. That building is actually the Arts Museum. There is a statue of Rocky at the base of the steps , but again we missed the photo. Ah well …we saw it! City hall is super impressive, even though Americans voted it the ugliest in America. This city is very historic indeed. This is where “America” began .  We did a walking tour of the old town and saw all the places where Adams, Jefferson, Washington and of course Ben Franklin discussed, signed, lived etc. Very, very  interesting  indeed. The local guide we had , Neil, was brilliant, very articulate, and knowledgeable. At the end of our walking tour we had dinner in the old city tavern, (just listening to the news….unemployment on the rise here!) We had traditional Philly food from the years of Ben, George, John and Thomas, and ate from pewter dishes. Wayne had the traditional ale – porter (more like an old). After dinner we walked back to the hotel. LA Galaxy staying here too, David  Beckham on the 8th and we are on the 12th. We were originally on the 7th but the room smelt of smoke so we requested a change. I think I REALLY like this city and could easily spend more time here. Over to Mr Right for his views.   L orraine XXXX

She Who Must Be Obeyed left out a few things. The biggest attraction in this town is the Liberty Bell, originally it was in the bell tower, but it was replaced by the Centenary Bell and moved down to a museum. We watched a short video about it and then took a few photos.  The room we’re in overlooks the Delaware River and we have a fantastic view. One of the bronze statues we saw last night depicted the Irish leaving their home country and emigrating to America, it’s a very powerful image and one we’re going back to now (8.15am) to take more photos. We didn’t logon last night as we have free wireless in the bus J Ooroo!

PS I purposely left the Liberty bell for himself to report on as he is the “ding-a-ling!!! L XXX

Philly bound!

Misty morning, packed and ready to go to Philly. It’s not really raining, more like a falling mist … sounds like rain doesn’t it 🙂 Brekkie in about 20 minutes, here’s Mrs. Always Right to say a few words. Himself didn’t mention that we went to church yesterday, the North Church, we sat in box pews and learnt about the Sons of Liberty and Paul Revere. Saw his house too. The Harvard bit was good …does a Tshirt equal a degree?  So today off to Philadelphia, will need to do the Rocky stair run, see the Liberty Bell and if I see a dog running rampant I know it will be Marley!

More later

Boston Cream Pie, isn’t !

It’s actually two layers of sponge with cream in the middle 🙂 We found that out this evening as we tucked into a three course dinner at the Parker House (our hotel); french onion soup, sirloin and then dessert, yum!

We spent the day exploring and learning about Boston, it’s history and … more history. A trip to Harvard was next, and we walked around the campus and learned still more history, love it! Lorraine and I can now say we went to Harvard. The afternoon was ours, so we walked around to Washington St and proceeded to look through the shops. Bought a bottle of Chandon and retired to our room for a drink before dinner. Tomorrow we head off to Philadelphia.

Crooked Little man in a crooked little…..

Remember the old nursery rhyme…a crooked little man is replaced by a crooked little couple and the crooked little house is replaced by a crooked little hotel room in the oldest continuously operating hotel in America, The Omni (hotel chain, not bubbles) Parker House. The little room is all skewed and twisted and the bed has a half metre base, with a huge mattress with a pillowtop on that! Needs a step ladder to get to bed . Appantly this is where JOK proposed to Jackie. Last night we went to the skywalk on top of the Prudential building, went shopping at Saks Fifth Avenue, here’s the list of what we bought. (   ) then we did a night walking tour of Boston, went to Beacon Hill (the posh, expensive housing sector) and walked on the original cobble stone street called Acorn Street .. why is it called Acorn Street ? because it puts a corn on every part of your feet. It was amusing when the 4WD Beemer had to manouver its way down the street. I wonder what the poor people are doing today? (going on a walking tour of Harvard University) Yesterday was essentially a travel day from Bar Harbor (a place for you all to plan a visit to) to Boston. Along the way we stopped at a huge supermarket. That was a real experience in itself, all the Halloween treats and foods are all a big thing and the incredibably bright orange cake icings and decorations had everyone gobsmacked. The wine section in the middle of the supermarket had Australian Wines (many) for cheaper than what we pay! We also went to Kennebunk Port, This is a coastal fishing (Lobster and clams mainly) town where the Bush Family have lived for 3-4 generations. It was a very pretty place. American people, asyou know, are very patriotic and with all the upcoming celebrations they are decorating their houses, wreaths, scarecrows and pumpkins from the harvests, in readiness for Thanksgiving and too, for the Halloween. They also hang flags and banners on their homes. I guess with 4 months of a very cold winter with snow and ice, they make the best of the colour. Anyhow, best away, need to go to breakfast, I’ll get Mr Right to check this, add anything he wants and we’ll be off.

PS I believe the postcards are taking for ever to arrive, will post the last lot today as we will be home before them.

Borston … Boooston

They speak funny here 🙂 We’ve *just* arrived in Boston and are heading out the door for a walking tour that includes a drink in the Cheers Bar (remember the TV series?). I’ll report in more detail soon. Oh, herself told me to tell y’all we stopped in Kennebunkport to have afternoon tea with George H. Bush! More to follow …..

Crush the Crustacean

Lobster dinner done …but the highlight was the Blueberry Pie ….yummo..reorganising bags to accommodate today’s purchases….tomorrow Boston bound …… there’s a bit of windy weather here in Bar Harbor….. inside the room! Thanks Wayne!

They don’t spell it with a “U” !

Bar Harbor does not have a “u” in it, contrary to my earlier post, damn yanks 🙂 This has to be the prettiest place we’ve seen so far, and it’s one place we’d both love to come back to for a longer visit. The day started with a beaut breakfast and then onto the bus to visit Acadia National Park; this alone is worth a week! Fantastic scenery and the Information Center had all plant, tree and fern species individually labelled, great idea. The bus took us up to Cadillac Mountain, stupendous views! Back down to the township and dropped off to start a shopping spree (again, oh my aching feet and wallet) .. mind you, this town is setup just for tourism. We had a really nice lunch at a place called “Carmen Verandah”; Buffalo Chicken Salad for herself and a toasted sandwich for me. We also tried a local beer, Blueberry Ale, yum! More shopping (including trying every single tourmaline ring on in one jewellery store). Finally, footsore and pretty buggered, we headed back to our hotel, ready for a “highlight” dinner tonight, Maine’s speciality; LOBSTER 🙂 Woohoo!!

A few things he left out ….this part of the world is famous for its wild blueberries , hence the blueberry beer at lunchtime, but we also had ice cream …blueberry of course…yummo …..there were some really lovely sights this morning , we also saw a Beaver pond , the beavers had built 2 lodges …thus damming the creek, creating a pond, very interesting. The sad thing is, beavers are the largest rodents in North America, takes the gleam off them eh? After the fur trade as mentioned in previous posts, they were almost extinct, but being rodents they are in safe numbers now. Another almost extinct species that is bringing itself back from almost extinction is the Peregrine Falcon, apparantly, some of the chemicals we were using over recent decades caused their egg shells to be soft, DDT in particular. We also saw the laboratory where all the mice for scientific research are bred ,  ewwww, but very interesting. Better go …off to Lobster dinner, a real specialty here. Web are apparantly getting a special gift tonight for being return Insight customers, don’t hold your breath, will report on this in next post …love to all …Mrs Always Right XXXXX  Oh and I didn’t really think this was worth mentioning but we went to see the “Thunder Hole” ……a mini Kiama Blow Hole ! They thought it was good, I thought it was a waste of shopping time! XXXX  Ian, look closely at the wine list photo, particularly the reds!

Now it is Morning…here’s the more!!!

The views  yesterday were sooooo good , you just have to keep using the same old words…spectacular, fantastic, sensational etc ….the Autumn colour went on and on, plains and hills after hills, reds, yellows, golds, tangerine,  rust, claret, and sometimes speckled amongst, the green and pointed peak of the spruce. It was reported that peak of colour may only last about 4 days before the colour actually falls,  so how lucky were we!!!!! WE saw it at its best. I can’t explain it any clearer …apart from saying that even the guide and driver were impressed …and they live here and see it all the time. The other thing that we witnessed was the opening of the hunting season, moose hunting, and the first 2 weeks are dedicated to the bow and arrow hunters …… heaps of them …and they were using crossbows. Hence there was no way that we were going to see a moose. We drove through little towns where cabins, cottages and non fancy dwellings were nestled in amongst the trees, the FORD pick-up (pronounced in American twang) and ATVs parked nearby and the bright orange pumpkins and scarecrows all adorning the front of the door ….it is more to do with Thanksgiving than Halloween (even though Hallowen is first) Thanksgiving in Canada is the 11th October and the USA , the 25th  November. In Canada the harvest is earlier and so Thankgiving is earlier. Another highlight of the travel yesterday was the covered bridge , Bridges of Madison County type, it was actually , the longest one. AND … I guess it was an omen …we stopped for coffee (hot chocolate actually) and a donut at a town called St George. Woohoo to Ian/Boxhead.

Quebec – Bar Harbour

It’s 9.45pm here, there was a line up for dinner tonight. Lorraine is tired and is already asleep. I’ve downloaded the days photos and have been going through them. Yesterday was a tour around Quebec then some free time in the afternoon before going to a fantastic buffet dinner in a revolving restaurant. The rain had stopped by the time we got to dinner, so I got a couple of good photos from on high. The next day (this morning) dawned clear and very crisp, 6 deg C in fact! Onto the bus aftyer an early breakfast and off on our way to the Canada/USA border. After a quick but thorough examination of us and our passports we entered US soil, now the second part of our holiday sarts: the USA bit 🙂

Time for bed, more in the morning.

Montreal – Quebec

Woke to another grey, rainy day. And the problem is? Nothing! We’re still having a fantastic time, this morning it was off to the Montreal Museum for breakfast. Cereal and fruit (wait for it … I ate mine! The fruit I mean, and enjoyed it) and then a guided tour through the museum. They’ve excavated under the museum, showing the original stream that was lined and roofed over to form a sewer for the growing city above. They had also uncovered part of an earlier cemetery and remains of the Indian settlement that existed before the French “discovered” what was to become Montreal. From there, out onto the highway and headed down to Drummondville for lunch. From there, into and then out of Quebec. OK, that doesn’t sound right, does it? Well, our Tour Guide, Jason, explained that by bypassing the hotel for now, and heading to the Montmorency Falls and the Sainte Anne De Beaupre Church would give us extra free time tomorrow (cue Lorraine woohooing “shopping time!”). Great, off to a beautiful church and then a quick photo shoot at the falls. Then back into Quebec, checked into the Hilton and headed off into the Old Quarter for a mouth watering salmon dinner. We then had a walking tour – in the pouring rain and wind! – back to the hotel … I needed it after the meal 🙂 Back in the room, quick download of photos (some are blurred, we took them through the bus windows) and write this, then into bed. Ooroo!

The Royal Mountain.

Yep, we’re in Montreal. We started in Ottawa at 8am, drove up to Parliament and looked around at the old buildings, statues and assorted histerical historical monuments. Bloody cold wind blowing! Some of the statues were quite interesting: the Queen on her horse and a group of women claiming to be “persons” amongst them. Hmm? Claiming? Yes, apparently before 1929 women were not “persons”, so a group of suffragettes agitated until they were recognised as “persons” (it’s in quotes because that’s what the declaration says on the statue, look at the photo). I was promptly and roundly chastised by all the females on the tour for suggesting this sort of nonsense is what led to our current sad state of affairs (look at our PM!!!) but won a moral victory – albeit shallow – when all the blokes gave me surreptitious nods and winks.

Off on the road again (lots of lovely orange, purple and red leaves now) to Montreal (Mount Royal, the Royal Mount – mind you, it’s only 250 mts high), dived downstairs (yes, underground shops like Toronto) for lunch and then on a tour of the city. This included a drive along the Grand Prix track … in a bus … at 30 kmh!! Then back to the hotel for a freshen up and then out to dinner in the Old Town. Steak! (insert Homer Simpson-like drool … steeeeak) Great steak, tender, juicy … yum! I shouted Lorraine (andmyself) a glass on Moet et Chandon, just because 🙂 Back to the hotel and start typing up the days blog and transferring photos, over to Mrs. Always Right for her comments.

It really is a pretty sight looking at all the “Fall Colour” as we drive along …..can’t write much …watching a program on Terry Fox …..we saw his statue today, he ran 3000 miles for cancer…..another DVD we watched today was on the Ice Storm in Montreal …for 7 days(the storm …not the DVD!) …scarey stuff …see ya …back to Terry! XXX

PPS Today we saw a groundhog and a fox …real ones ….pretty cool …XXX

Toronto – Kingston – Ottawa

Phew, what a long day! We’ve only just got into our room, 9pm is a late finish, but again, we had fun 🙂 Nice breakfast, then onto the bus and fought our way through Toronto’s morning traffic snarls. Along the highways, admiring the colours of autumn as the trees change. It’s only the maple trees that change colour to the brilliant reds, purple and oranges – and there’s 70 different varieties! The other tree’s leaves simply go yellow and then fall (fall … ha! get it? jeez, I kill me sometimes). We stopped at Kingston for lunch, Lorraine had what is becoming her favourite over here – poutine http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poutine while I had a slice of pizza (a bit doughy compared to ours, as is the bread and rolls). From there, out along the lake past the Thousand Islands – apparently, a chef (the private chef to the owner of the Waldorf Astor Hotel chain) was trying to duplicate the colour of the local rock formations and created a salad dressing called … wait for it … Thousand Island Dressing! Driving, driving …. zzzzzz … huh? Oh, Ottawa! We stopped at the Canadian Museum for 2 hours .. you need 2 days! This is what all museums should be!! Fantastic panoramic displays setup as actual buildings, homes, shops and shipyards, we wandered through with mouths agape and learnt heaps of Canadian history and weird little factoids (great for trivia nights – did you know that the horse has the largest eye of all land mammals?). I took a photo outside of two really nice people we’ve clicked with, Julie and George (he’s a stirrer, she puts up with him, sound familiar?). From there, we went to Turtle Island and the Aborginal Experience. Jumped into a canoe and paddled around the river while the guides (French) explained about the fur trade (beaver pelts were traded and the English made them into Top Hats),  trappers and early settlement of the region. Back to shore for a great dinner, explanation of the teepee, wigwam, long house and more and then native dances. Those dancers … wow!! They can really move, especially the “hoop dance”! I took some night photos of the parliment building, we’ll be visiting those more tomorrow. Ahhh, just finished another bottle of Canadian Club, time for bed!

PS Mrs Always Right thinks the First Nations (“the traditional owners of the land” as we call them) people have a wonderful history to share …look up the hoop dance on google …it was brilliant , something that will stick in my mind for a long time …sensational …XXXX

PPS Note that Mr Right is becoming a postcard  photographer…. good memories though …XXXX

So long and thanks for all the fish.

This post is farewell to Toronto and the great 9 days we spent in and around the city. When you include Niagra in the mix, that time doesn’t seem enough. Totally, thoroughly recommend Toronto to anyone thinking of starting a holiday in Canada. We’re off to Kingston, then to Ottawa for a “Highlight Dinner”; a trip across the lake in a giant canoe, a bit of tribal whoopee and then a special dinner. Hopefully the rain holds off!

To Karen Henderson, I’m really sorry we didn’t get together for a drink or meal; if we weren’t tromping around we were in the hot spa soaking our tired feet, or we were passed out on the bed exhausted. You have a lovely city here 🙂

PS …Mr Right thinks you’ll all understand the title …it’s some literary quote….there are times when he knows more than me! Au Revoir Toronto….Au Revoir pancake pillows…Mrs Always Right XXX

Misty Monday

Big day!! Up early and downstairs for the first hotel brekkie since we’ve been here. It was nice just to have cereal and toast and a cuppa. First stop: CN Tower. Great ride up and great view … then it was down to the glass floor level. It took me about 5 minutes to get up the courage to step out onto what felt and looked like nothing between me and a 342 metre drop to the ground! Talk about weird head spins! Took some photos and even coaxed Lorraine out onto it.

From there it was a drive out to Niagra Falls, the trees are just starting to turn, glorious colours. Into the town and then onto the “Maid of the Mist” boat tour. Over and almost under the Horseshoe Falls, great fun and very damp afterwards! Spectacular sight and well worth getting wet for. From there we went up into the town itself for lunch at Boston Pizza. Nice lunch but jeez the town itself is so tacky; like a combination of the worst features of Kings Cross and The Ekka’s Sideshow Alley in the ’80s! From Niagra Falls we went to Niagra on the Lake. Huge difference, Niagra on the Lake is a beautiful town with great little shops and fantastic street gardens (the photos will show you what I mean). Only an hour there, we could have easily spent 4 or 5 there.

Back on the road to Toronto .. and bang into huge traffic snarls and holdups! We didn’t get back to the Hotel until after 7, straight into dinner … finished that after 9pm! We’re not used to eating that late, plus we had to come upstairs to pack and get ready to hit the road first thing in the morning. Good onya!

Sunday is washing day …

Last day before the tour itself starts. Up early and watched the start of the Toronto Waterfront Marathon – from our window! Packed all the dirty clothes into a couple of bags and headed off along Queens St West to a local laundromat. Back to the hotel and then headed down to the harbour. Beaut day, sunny but a bit chilly (13 deg). Wandered around then caught the double decker bus from Union Station – that had to be one of the best value tickets to get in any city, unlimited get on – get off for a week! Picked up some more Canadian Club for later and had a really nice taco salad for lunch. When we got back to the hotel, in the lobby, we saw the Insight Tour Guide waiting for people to arrive. So we registered, picked up our name tags and went downstairs at 6pm to meet the rest of the bus people. Nice group, I think we’re among the youngest on the trip 🙂 Doesn’t worry us at all, we’re sure we’ll have a blast. All aussies except for 1 couple from England and a bloke from America. Off to Niagra Falls tomorrow, romantic, eh!

Not in the Mood

Well as you can see Mr Right was not in the mood to blog. Anyhow, our day wasn’t that boring …we did come back to the hotel early, by streetcar, and had a very restful afternoon. We watched “The Karate Kid”, in house, and then went for our daily spa (hot tub as they call it here) and swim. Today the hot tub was full of “beautiful” people preparing for the Toronto Marathon tomorrow morning. The talk was all about distance and time etc. Anyhow Wayne found it more entertaining talking with the 3 year old (Shaughnessy) [spelling?]. We then went out for a beautiful meal at an Italian restaurant “Little Anthony’s”…just what we both needed, some lovely fresh vegies with salmon for me, and veal for himself. It was very delicious. It was a great way to finish off a somewhat relaxing day. Tomorrow, the marathon, but not for us….. our last day before picking up the tour. We meet the other travellers tomorrow evening for drinks in the bar.  Until next time …take care …Mrs Always Right.

Back bacon, brined and coated in fine cornmeal

is called peameal bacon. We had chunks of that on fresh rolls for brekkie this morning, at the markets. Nice … not what I’d like everyday, but nice different, if you know what I mean. From there to the Distillery and Brewery District. It was very quiet, so after a bit of a wander around we headed back toward the hotel. An uneventful morning, but we’re both a bit footsore and tired so a restful day was in order.

Been a few years since that has happened! Now, we had to dress a little warmer today, maximum temperature 16 degrees….after yesterday, what a change. They predict that today’s weather will stay. Am a bit worried about little girl, Georgia, it is not good that she is sick, hopefully we can Skype her soon , Uncle Boof might cheer her up!

Today we saw a chipmunk!!!!  Even though it was at the zoo it was not in any of the enclosures ….it was in the wilderness part …he ran right across the road infront of us as we were walking. Tiny little things they are…they would fit into your hand….. a very small version of a squirrel …in fact they are the smallest of the squirrels. I called him “Chip”…I wonder what our next animal observation will be …..maybe a moose ….I’ll call him “Bruce” …..rest time …zzzzz

Record High Temperature in Toronto.

Yes, the day we decided to go to the zoo and have a nice, easy day wandering around looking at the world’s #2 zoo … became a 31 degree, 80 kmh winds, sunny day. Early start, walked up Queen St W and found a laundromat not too far away, then up to find the subway station (Spadina for those interested). Stopped off at a 7-Eleven for some yoghurt, ham and cheese sandwich and a cranberry juice for brekkie. Onto the subway and then bus to the zoo. All the public transport people were very nice and helpful, it only cost $3 each to get all the way to the zoo (about 45 mins). Got to the Zoo at about 10.30 and headed up to see the Tundra Exhibit (Polar Bears. etc). With the day rapidly approached historically record high temperatures, the bears and wolves for some reason only wanted to lie around and pant! So, up to see the Sumatran Tigers, Orangutangs, etc.  Ah, this weather is much more conducive to these animals. Past the gorilla enclosure (Ian, I saw your double … and it was a female!) and then we headed to what we had anticipated, the Canadian section. The Toronto Zoo really is fantastic (apart from what seemed to be a very old sad looking Tundra area .. maybe it was the weather?) but it’s also very spread out. The Canadian section is reached by walking uphill then down a very long steep hill. Uh huh .. down first, look lots and then … long, slow, hot climb back up. Down the bottom (a zoo type bloke pulled up, and when we said “G’day” advised us to walk straight to the bottom and then look at the exhibits on the way up, resting as we go), grizzlies! According to the display board, Polar bears are bigger, but these two looked as big as hefalumps! Slow, bored looking … but still not something you’d want to see while camping (none of these at Coolum, Marcus … except maybe Roger before his morning coffee).  Over to see the moose (mooses?) and then the slow painful climb back past cougars, raccoons and lynxs … phew! /walked slowly back to the bus and quizzed the bus driver about where we could buy something to drink. He dropped us off opposite a LCBO (bottlo in Oz), we gathered the neccessities of life – Canada Club and Canada Dry and headed home, totally shagged out. Lorraine is zzzzzz-ing at the moment, I’m about to wake her for yet another (and now nightly ritual) spa and pool.

Good onyas!

PS. Lorraine is not zzzzz ing …she is counting the milliseconds between each throb of feet pain. 5 days of constant walking.

Blue Jays v Mariners

Another great day, started off with a harbour cruise to the Toronto Islands and finished with a ballgame. The first ballgame I saw was in Seattle during the MCM course at Microsoft, coincidently the second also involved the Mariners. The highlight of the game was one of the batters, Jose Bautista, hitting his 50th home run of the season, apparently only 26 others have done so in the history of major league http://ca.sports.yahoo.com/mlb/recap?gid=300923114  . Mind you, I’m quoting these stats, I’m no expert on american baseball 🙂 We had beers and hotdogs (the beer was an excellent IPA , Alexander Keith’s) and a bag of peanuts, good healthy food, eh. Walked back to the Hilton and decided to soak our feet in the spa again …. no pressing the red button though! We’re still having a fantastic (just a little exhausting) time; off to the Zoo tomorrow .. there aren’t enough hours in the day to see and do everything we’d like to, we still have to catch up with Karen for a drink 🙂 Good onya!

Harvest Moon

We arose this morning to a “Harvest Moon”…..very pretty sight outside the hotel window, according to the weather station “Fall” started last night at 11:o9 pm (they must set the seasons by the moon, not the date) so we are now just about to leave for a brisk walk to the harbour area for a bite to eat and then a harbour cruise around the Toronto Islands. After the cruise we will return to the Rogers Stadium for the Blue Jays V Seattle Mariners baseball game. (starts at 12:07pm) ..very strange start times!!! Iwonder what “incident” will entertain us today …if I catch the ball I get to keep it! Toronto’s Number one batter is going for his 50th home run of the season ….a rare feat I believe…he missed it last night , and the night before …so hopefully today.  See ya … Mrs Always Right (but not so in the spa yesterday)

Embarrassing accident in the spa!

We were soaking in a beautifully hot spa downstairs in the Hilton when …. more on that later! Today was really fun; we discovered the PATH! No, we haven’t shaved our heads and put on saffron robes, we found a network of underground tunnels, 28 kms long, full of shops and eateries. http://www.toronto.ca/path/ describes and even has a printable map (great when you’re in a hotel room … I can print to my home printer across the internet, but I can’t print here in the room <g>) Back to the story … we walked from the Hilton to Union Sqare – lovely old railway station; it’s a hub for trains, buses and taxis. Along the way, Lorraine just happened to find a jewellry store (she happens to find every one, mind you!) and went in looking for Pandora charms.Authentic Pandora Silver Canada bead for Winter Olympicis what we found, but to get it we had to go back across town to Eaton Square. So we jumped on the bus back around to Eaton Square and bought it; one very happy Lorraine 🙂 Back through the Hudson’s Bay Company (yet another big department store) and back down under onto the PATH. We wound our way back to the Hilton and then relaxed in a hot spa. Now, it’s time for a drink or three, catch you later!

What? The spa accident? Ah … well … we were soaking in the hot water when the bubbles stopped. Lorraine did her usual and ordered me to restart them … easy … riiiight. I gingerly climbed out and over to the timer switch, turned it right around and … nothing! “Hit the big red button” bellowed the Minister for War, Finance and Entertainment” So, like a dutiful husband I did just that.

The big red button is the Emergency Button.

The big red button makes a BIG, LOUD and VERY ALARMING NOISE!

Pulling out the big red button stops said noise … which I did .. and quickly slid back into the spa, ready to point to a fictional child if anyone came in.

Like I said, catch you later 🙂

Never, never, never, never coming back here!

Heh 🙂 No, we haven’t had a bad day, in fact (especially after finding Capt. Kirk’s grundies on the footpath) we had a great, but exhausting, day.  After brekkie at Tim Hortons (the coffee always seems weak, even Starbucks, plus Lorraine says hers alwasys tastes  ‘greasy”) we wandered through the entertainment area and up to Rogers Stadium, home of the Toronto Blue Jays (and other teams, but it’s the BJ’s we’re going to see on Thursday). We grabbed an ice cream, admired the gardens and then paid for an hour tour of the stadium. We had a very knowledgeable guide, but mate, was he weird! He walked backwards almost constantly, talking and explaining (it was almost a continuous moonwalk, ala Michael Jackson). We went into the VIP and Corporate boxes (wow!) into the media room and finally, down onto the actual playing surface – astro turf # something … and every place we went, as we left, he said “make sure you have everything, ‘cuz we’re never, never, never, never coming back here!” After our tour (notice the 9foot high hairdryer – for basketball players!), we jumped the double decker tour bus and went back to the Eaton Centre and did some shopping. Lorriane bought a new jacket and jeans (Sears), I got a new polo. Grabbed some Canada Dry and back to the room to rest our aching feet! Lorraine is now snoring while I type this 🙂 Tomorrow; the zoo! (insert kids singing “we’re all going to the zoo tomorrow….”) and I must ring Karen to meet up for a coffee – or more Canadian Club.

Toilet Humour

That is one thing I’m impressed with Canada.. they know how to spell..humour, not humor. Anyhow , we have finished our first full day in Toronto and I have some realisations/discoveries to share . Firstly, the toilet, it has me totally “connected”….it is quite disconcerting, you go to  the loo and wonder, do you sit or dive in? …the water goes nearly all way to the top of the rim and we won’t talk about floaties shall we? … Too close for comfort!…. that really brings a new dimension to the discussion. Anyhow we had a great day …I awoke this morning to learn that the light switches are reversed..you flick up for on …does that make sense? And did I mention that the water does NOT go counterclockwise (ohh that is so American )….ANTI-Clockwise, down the toilet.  Note …I am back to the toilet! My other really incongruent comment …we went to the “Drug Store” and bought junk snack food . Things are so confusing .. a drug store is like a chemist and yet they sell chips, coke, chocolate etc….oh, and we also bought Omega 3; for fish oil and multi-vitamins. And…I’ve been looking for a Canadian Mountie…..and what did I see?   A Canadian mount the kerb …taxi drivers are the same no matter where you are!!!!  Better stop now …Wayne thinks I’ve had enough….. we’ve only had half of the 1.4 litre bottle of Canadian Club..better go and have the rest!!!!  Bye !!!
